GLENDALE, Ariz. — Von Miller joined the Dallas Cowboys to boost the team’s pass rush after being among the bottom of the NFL in many key categories last season. However, the team also brought the 37-year-old in to help teach his new teammates how to maximize their potential.
Miller’s hands-on leadership showed up during the Cowboys’ 34-13 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday, even though he did not play. On the broadcast, he was shown sharing pass-rush technique with rookie edge rusher Malachi Lawrence on the sideline. Joseph Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News posted the clip.
Miller joined the Cowboys on a one-year, $5.5 million contract. It could reach $7.5 million with incentives.
Von Miller’s NFL Career To This Point
Miller is entering his 15th NFL season. He has 138.5 career sacks, which ties him for ninth in league history since sacks became official in 1982. He shares that spot with DeMarcus Ware.
No active player has more sacks than Miller. He is 6.5 ahead of Cam Jordan. Miller finished with 9 sacks for the Washington Commanders last season on a 37% snap share. His career high occurred in 2012 with 18.5. He has 10.5 sacks in 16 playoff games.
Miller earned the Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2011 and the MVP of Super Bowl 50. He has made eight Pro Bowls, earned first-team All-Pro honors three times and second-team four times, and won two Super Bowls. He grew up in DeSoto and played at Texas A&M.
Malachi Lawrence And The Dallas Cowboys Edge Room
Dallas will gladly take any development wisdom from Miller in the team’s pass rush. The Cowboys drafted Lawrence 23rd overall in April out of UCF, where he was first-team All-Big 12 last season.
In addition to Lawrence, the Cowboys brought in Rashan Gary to help improve the pass rush. Gary arrived by trade from the Green Bay Packers, coming off a season with 7.5 sacks. Donovan Ezeiruaku is entering his second year after Dallas took him in the second round in 2025.
The Cowboys have a lot to prove in the pass rush. Last year, they ranked 26th in sack rate, surrendered the most passing yards, and allowed 511 points, the highest in the NFL. Since Christian Parker took over as defensive coordinator in January, he has instilled optimism in the defense.
Dallas concludes the preseason on Friday with a game against the New Orleans Saints at AT&T Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT, and CBS will broadcast the game.
