‘A Guy Like That Is Invaluable’: Brian Schottenheimer Praises Von Miller’s Dallas Cowboys Impact

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said the first thing that was obvious about Von Miller was that Miller had been working out.

“Sits in the front of every meeting and his pen or pencil doesn’t stop. He writes everything down. He’s a true pro,” Schottenheimer said.

The Cowboys announced the deal on Aug. 16. Miller took his first practice reps with Dallas four days later, on the final Thursday of camp in Oxnard.

“A guy like that is invaluable for what we’re trying to build,” Schottenheimer explained.

Miller is not in the Dallas starting defense against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday night.

What Von Miller Signed For

Miller signed for one year at $5.5 million, with incentives that can carry the deal to $7.5 million.

In Washington last season, Miller played on a contract with a $6.1 million base and a $10.5 million maximum. Dallas had $18.5 million in cap space before the agreement, according to Over the Cap.

To make room on the roster, Dallas waived Traeshon Holden.

Von Miller’s Career Before Dallas

Miller grew up in DeSoto. Denver drafted him second overall in 2011 out of Texas A&M, and 15 seasons later Dallas is the fifth franchise of his career. He has played 203 games for the Broncos, Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills, and Washington Commanders.

Miller has 138.5 career sacks, more than any other active player. That total ties DeMarcus Ware for ninth on the official list, which dates to 1982.

Across all 17 games for Washington last season, 3 of them starts, Miller finished with 9 sacks and 26 combined tackles. The 9 sacks were his most since 2021. In 11 different seasons he has reached 8 sacks.

The Dallas Cowboys Pass Rush In 2026

Dallas tied for 26th in the NFL in sacks last season and ranked ninth in pass rush win rate. The Cowboys allowed more passing yards than any other team. Dallas hired Christian Parker as defensive coordinator in January.

Jadeveon Clowney led the team with 8.5 sacks and left in free agency.

The Cowboys traded for Rashan Gary and drafted Malachi Lawrence 23rd overall before signing Miller. Donovan Ezeiruaku, James Houston, Sam Williams, and Marist Liufau were already on the roster. The outside linebacker room now carries three first-round picks.
