FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys put in a waiver claim on cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. on Monday and did not get him. The Las Vegas Raiders held the No. 1 priority and took him instead.
Field Yates of ESPN reported Tuesday that four other teams filed on Luter: the Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, Cowboys, and Indianapolis Colts. Two claims were the most any other player waived over the weekend drew.
The San Francisco 49ers waived Luter on Aug. 30 while cutting to 53. Claims across the league were due at noon CT Monday. Waiver priority at this stage of the year follows the 2026 draft order, and Las Vegas picked first overall.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Monday afternoon that the Raiders were expected to take Luter. A team holding the top spot can claim as many players as it wants. Luter was the only one Las Vegas claimed, and none of the players the Raiders waived Sunday were claimed elsewhere.
Darrell Luter Jr.’s Three Seasons In San Francisco
Luter started three of the 17 games he played for the 49ers last season. He finished with 28 tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass defensed, and a fumble recovery. His 273 special teams snaps were 63% of San Francisco’s total. On defense he played 271, or 25%. Opposing quarterbacks completed 11 of 19 throws against him for 151 yards and a touchdown.
He has 27 career games and three starts. San Francisco drafted him in the fifth round, 155th overall, in 2023 out of South Alabama, where he landed after two seasons at Pearl River Community College. He played seven games as a rookie and three in 2024. Luter is 26 and listed at 6-foot, 190 pounds.
Where The Dallas Cowboys Stand At Cornerback
Dallas kept five corners on its initial 53: DaRon Bland, Cobie Durant, Shavon Revel Jr., Caelen Carson, and Ameer Speed. The Cowboys placed rookie Devin Moore on reserve/injured with a designation to return, and Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday that the injury is to Moore’s hip. Moore, the 114th pick in April out of Florida, has to sit out the first four games before he can be activated.
Dallas signed Derion Kendrick and Reddy Steward to the practice squad Monday, a day after releasing both. The Cowboys did add one player on waivers, claiming running back Emari Demercado from the Arizona Cardinals. Demercado worked with Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams in Arizona.
Dallas waived 28 players and released seven to reach 53. The Cowboys open the regular season Sept. 13 at MetLife Stadium against the New York Giants. Kickoff is 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC.
