ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers added right-hander Trevor Williams to their major league roster on Tuesday and recalled infielder/outfielder Cameron Cauley from Triple-A Round Rock, according to the team.
Major league active rosters increase from 26 to 28 players starting Sept. 1 and remain at that size until the end of the regular season. With Williams and Cauley included, the Rangers have reached the 28-player maximum.
Washington released Williams last week. The Nationals designated him for assignment on Aug. 25 during their series against Texas, and he was in the second year of a two-year, $14 million contract signed after the 2024 season. Texas owes him the prorated major league minimum for time on the active roster.
What Trevor Williams Brings To The Texas Rangers Bullpen
Williams has appeared 8 times this season, all in relief, pitching 17 innings with 15 hits, 5 earned runs, 6 walks, and 22 strikeouts. He has struck out 31% of batters faced. Opponents are batting .238 against him.
Williams last pitched at Globe Life Field on Aug. 18, for Washington. He worked 3.1 innings out of the Nationals bullpen that night, allowing 2 hits and no runs with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts in a 5-0 Rangers win.
Internal brace surgery in July 2025 kept Williams out until late July of this year. He opened 2026 on the injured list, and he has pitched only in relief since being activated, finishing 5 of his 8 games.
Over 11 seasons, Williams has a 4.43 ERA in 1,026 innings spanning 227 games, including 178 starts. Four seasons were with Washington, where he appeared in 68 games and started 60, compiling a 4.81 ERA over 310.2 innings. In 2024, he posted a 2.03 ERA in 13 starts, while in 2025, before his elbow injury, he had a 6.21 ERA in 17 starts.
The Rangers announced the signing at 10:30 a.m. CT. Major League Baseball sets its postseason eligibility cutoff at noon ET on Sept. 1, and players on a club’s 40-man roster or 60-day injured list at that point are eligible for that club’s postseason roster.
Where The Texas Rangers Bullpen Stood Before The Signing
Texas had 4 relievers available for Monday’s 8-1 win over the Athletics, 2 of them in high-leverage roles. Five relievers had worked the day before in Milwaukee, in the last game of a six-game trip.
Before Monday’s series opener, Texas placed right-handers Peyton Gray and Cole Winn on the 15-day injured list and recalled left-hander Robby Ahlstrom and right-hander Ben Peoples from Round Rock. Nathan Eovaldi has been on the 15-day injured list since Aug. 9 with right posterior elbow inflammation.
The Rangers carry a 4.36 bullpen ERA, which ranks 23rd in the majors.
Cameron Cauley’s Season With The Texas Rangers
Cauley made his debut on June 29 and has played 28 games so far. He is batting .207/.281/.345, with 12 hits, 1 home run, 9 runs scored, and 1 RBI. Throughout the season, he has appeared at four different positions: 12 games at second base, 11 in center field, 3 in right field, and 2 at shortstop.
Texas selected Cauley in the third round of the 2021 draft, No. 73 overall, from Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu. His latest major league game was on Aug. 13 against the Los Angeles Angels, where he went 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter.
Texas is 68-70 and second in the American League West, two games behind the Houston Astros and 1 1/2 games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the third American League wild-card spot. The Rangers have 24 games left, 16 of them at Globe Life Field.
Left-hander MacKenzie Gore (7-10, 4.40 ERA) starts Tuesday against Athletics left-hander Brady Basso (0-1, 4.50). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. CT on Rangers Sports Network.
