FRISCO, Texas — Von Miller said the Dallas Cowboys have not given him a plan for Week 1, and that he wants more practice reps than he is getting.
Miller’s read on himself in his 16th NFL season is that he is a coach’s dream who tries to make everyone else’s job easier.
“No, I don’t have any plan, but this is my 16th year in the National Football League,” Miller said. “I like to think that I’m a coach’s dream. I just try to make everybody’s job easy, whether it’s coaches, players around me. Whatever I can do to help contribute to wins, that’s why I’m here. Whether that’s in the locker room, out there on the football field. I’m still a sack daddy too, so I have my opportunities to go out there and rush the quarterback as well and contribute to wins.”
Von Miller On How Dallas Ramped Him Up
Miller sat out training camp before signing and said the Cowboys’ training staff has brought him along without leaving him gassed.
“That’s a good feeling to have,” Miller explained. “Fortunately for me here, we have some of the best athletic trainers and guru workers. We have some of the best here in the National Football League, and I’ve been all over. So they’ve done a really good job of ramping me up, and that’s the feeling that you want to have. You want to have that feeling like, hey, I’m in shape. I can do a little bit more. That means we’re doing something right.”
“You don’t want it to be on the opposite side where I’m gassed and thinking like, hey, I need to take a couple plays off,” Miller added. “So they’ve been doing a really good job of getting me acclimated. Not that I needed time to get acclimated, but it’s always good to be safe. And they’ve done an incredible job of getting me ready to play.”
Von Miller’s Deal And The Cowboys’ Edge Group
Miller agreed to terms Aug. 16 on a one-year contract worth $5.5 million that can reach $7.5 million. Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported the agreement and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the terms. He first practiced Aug. 18.
The DeSoto native turned 37 on March 26. Denver drafted him second overall in 2011 out of Texas A&M. He is an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, a three-time first-team All-Pro, and a two-time Super Bowl champion, and he was the Super Bowl 50 MVP and the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2011.
Miller joins an edge group with Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, and first-round pick Malachi Lawrence.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Thursday that he sees Miller’s happiness in meetings and on the practice field.
The Cowboys open Sept. 13 at MetLife Stadium against the New York Giants. Kickoff is 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC.
