ARLINGTON, Texas — Jack Leiter‘s biceps soreness is nothing structural, Texas Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young said Monday on “G-Bag Nation” on 105.3 The Fan.
The right-hander reported the soreness after a one-inning rehab outing at Triple-A Round Rock on Aug. 26. It was his third rehab appearance and his first in relief.
Leiter is due to be reevaluated within a day or two, and the decision after that is whether he makes another rehab outing.
“Jack’s had a little bit of a setback,” Young said. “I don’t know the exact cause, but his biceps is a little sore and achy after his last rehab outing. His command was not very good. You could tell he was compensating a little bit for the discomfort in his biceps.”
“It’s nothing structural. It’s nothing that we’re overly concerned with,” Young continued. “That said, we want to make sure that he is feeling as close to 100% as possible before we put him back in competition. So we’re letting that calm down for a couple days. He’s going to reevaluate here in the next day or two as to where he is and how he’s feeling and then decide what the next steps are in terms of another rehab outing. But we’ve got to let this thing calm down before we put him back out in competition.”
Jack Leiter’s Ankle Surgery And Injured List Timeline
Leiter has not pitched for Texas since June 18. He went on the injured list June 21, retroactive to June 19, and had arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle on June 23 to remove a small extra bone. Texas moved him to the 60-day injured list on Aug. 9.
Before the Round Rock outing, Leiter threw 59 pitches over 3 innings for Double-A Frisco against Wichita, allowing 3 hits and 2 walks.
The Rangers drafted Leiter second overall in 2021 out of Vanderbilt University.
Round Rock’s Calendar Closes Sept. 20
Round Rock’s regular season ends Sept. 20. Activating Leiter would require a 40-man roster spot, since he is on the 60-day list.
Young addressed Leiter in the same answer as Josh Jung‘s calf rehab.
Texas Rangers Make Four Roster Moves Monday
Active rosters across the majors expand from 26 players to 28 on Tuesday, and the pitcher limit rises from 13 to 14 for the rest of the regular season.
On Monday, Texas placed right-handers Peyton Gray and Cole Winn on the 15-day injured list and recalled left-hander Robby Ahlstrom and right-hander Ben Peoples from Round Rock.
Monday’s first pitch against the Athletics at Globe Life Field is 7:05 p.m. CT. Texas is 67-70 with 25 games left, second in the American League West and two games behind the Houston Astros. The game airs on Rangers Sports Network.
