FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys are waiving running back Jaydon Blue, Adam Schefter reported Sunday, citing a source.
Blue has one accrued season, so he goes to waivers instead of directly entering free agency. Rosters must be reduced to 53 players by 5 p.m. CT on Sunday. The claims process begins at noon CT on Monday, with practice squad signings at 5 p.m.
Dallas waived Phil Mafah earlier Sunday. Both came out of the 2025 draft, Blue at 149th overall out of Texas, Mafah at 239th out of Clemson. That leaves Javonte Williams, Malik Davis, Hunter Luepke, Israel Abanikanda, and Jashaun Corbin in the room.
Jaydon Blue’s Preseason With The Dallas Cowboys
Blue sat out the preseason finale on Friday, joining Williams and Davis. The week before, at Arizona, he led Dallas with 15 carries for 75 yards and also returned a kickoff 26 yards. He played in the preseason opener at Seattle on Aug. 15.
Fumbling followed him through camp. He put the ball on the ground more than once in the joint practice against the Los Angeles Rams, and it had been a problem in Oxnard before that.
Jaydon Blue’s Rookie Season
Blue dressed for 5 games in 2025 and carried 38 times for 129 yards with 1 touchdown. He topped 15 snaps once, in the Week 18 finale.
A bruised heel cost him the first two preseason games last summer. He came back Aug. 22 against Atlanta and sprained his low right ankle. Dallas made him inactive for the first two regular-season games, both coach’s decisions, with Williams and Miles Sanders the only backs dressed.
He fumbled against Denver in Week 8. He was a healthy scratch the next four games, and Davis moved into the No. 2 job behind Williams. Blue had 22 carries for 65 yards at that point.
The Fantasy Points Data shows his explosive run rate at 2.6% and missed tackle rate at 11%, with an average of 1.58 yards after contact per attempt. These figures are based on 38 carries.
Blue spent 2022 and 2023 at Texas behind Bijan Robinson and Jonathon Brooks, then backed up Tre Wisner in 2024. Some analysts had a Day 2 grade on him going into the draft.
Dallas cut wide receiver Denzel Mims on Saturday. The Cowboys are also releasing wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling and offensive tackle Marcellus Johnson, and cutting tight end Michael Trigg with plans to bring him back on the practice squad. Week 1 is Sept. 13 at MetLife Stadium. Kickoff is 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC.
