FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys are cutting tight end Michael Trigg and plan to bring him back on the practice squad, Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reported Sunday, citing sources.
He has to clear waivers first. Rosters have to be at 53 by 5 p.m. CT Sunday, claims process at noon CT Monday, and practice squads are due at 5 p.m. Any of the other 31 teams can take him before Dallas gets him back.
Trigg went undrafted in April and signed with Dallas the same week. Spotrac put the guarantee at $200,000, among the largest given to an undrafted player this year. He wore No. 46 at 6-4, 240.
He caught 4 passes for 30 yards over three preseason games. Friday against the New Orleans Saints he drew three targets and caught none of them, all three from Joe Milton III in the first half. Mitch Van Vooren, the other undrafted tight end in the room, caught a 21-yard touchdown from Sam Howell in the fourth quarter of that game. Dallas held Trigg out of the final Oxnard practice on Aug. 20 along with Jonathan Bullard.
Michael Trigg At Baylor
Trigg caught 50 passes for 694 yards and 6 touchdowns last season. He was a first-team All-Big 12 pick. The John Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end, made him one of three finalists.
His 1,089 receiving yards are a Baylor record for a tight end. His single-season yardage is a Baylor record too. He ranks second at the position with 80 career catches. He played 21 games in Waco with 17 starts.
He caught 30 passes for 395 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2024, his first year with the Bears. He made second-team All-Big 12 that season.
Michael Trigg’s Road To Waco
Trigg was a top-10 tight end recruit in the 2021 class and committed to USC, where he caught 7 passes for 109 yards as a freshman. He transferred to Ole Miss in January 2022 and caught 17 for 156 the following fall. Three games into 2023 he was off the program. He entered the portal again on Dec. 23 and landed at Baylor.
He left college with 108 catches for 1,418 yards and 14 touchdowns, and an invitation to the Senior Bowl in Mobile on Jan. 21.
Trigg served a one-game suspension at Ole Miss and another at Baylor. On Sept. 20 last season, before the Arizona State game, Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades confronted him on the sideline over a yellow shirt he was wearing to cover a shoulder brace, OutKick reported. The school investigated. Trigg caught two touchdowns and finished with 71 yards that day.
Dallas cut wide receiver Denzel Mims on Saturday. The Cowboys are also waiving running back Phil Mafah and releasing wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling and offensive tackle Marcellus Johnson. Week 1 is Sept. 13 at MetLife Stadium. Kickoff is 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC.
