FRISCO, Texas — Brian Schottenheimer did not call Camden Brown to tell him he made the Dallas Cowboys roster.
Brown is the only undrafted rookie on the initial 53 and one of 6 rookies on it. Dallas signed him out of Georgia Southern after the draft.
“I didn’t have a conversation with him,” Schottenheimer said. “Our focus and my focus, Nick, when you go through this weekend, it’s more about spending the time and your energy with the young men that you’re giving the really tough information to. That’s why you don’t call everybody and say congratulations, because you’re emotionally drained. You’re sad.”
Brian Schottenheimer First Heard The Name After The Draft
“When the draft ends, the coaches and scouts really go into warp speed, trying to make decisions to sign your UDFAs. And I usually pour myself a Schotty. Actually, it’s frozen margarita, sorry,” Schottenheimer explained. “But I remember hearing the name Camden Brown and hearing the guys talk about it, the scouts and the coaches. And they were really excited, along with a number of the other guys, but I didn’t know much about him.”
Brown caught 3 passes for 62 yards and 2 touchdowns in the preseason opener at Seattle, including a one-handed catch in the third quarter. He caught 4 passes for 77 yards against the Arizona Cardinals the following week.

Schottenheimer said Brown stands over him while he relays plays to the quarterback in practice.
“So when I’m giving the plays to the quarterback, Patrik, I always feel a shadow, like literally it’s a shadow on my left,” Schottenheimer said. “And so at some point I was just like, back up. ‘But coach, what you got? Coach, what you got? Coach, what you got?’ So I’m giving the play to the quarterback, and then I’m like, you ready? But the guy makes plays every day. And his ball skills are unique.”
What Camden Brown Has To Do To Dress On Game Day
Dallas kept 6 receivers. CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Ryan Flournoy, KaVontae Turpin, and Jonathan Mingo are the others. Flournoy ranked fourth on the team in receiving yards last season with 475.
“What I will tell him when we get a chance to sit down is special teams is a big part of what you have to do,” Schottenheimer said. “If you want to be active on game day and things like that, you can’t just be a guy that catches red zone fades all day long. But terrific young man, works like crazy.”
Dallas opens the regular season Sept. 13 at MetLife Stadium against the New York Giants. Kickoff is 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC.
