FRISCO, Texas — Marist Liufau had not undergone surgery on his fractured forearm as of Monday afternoon, Brian Schottenheimer said.
Schottenheimer said Friday that the Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker would have the operation as early as Monday.
“No, I don’t believe he has,” Schottenheimer said when asked whether the surgery had happened. “He’s got the fractured forearm, IR, DFR.”
Liufau fractured his left forearm late in the first quarter of Friday’s 27-24 loss to the New Orleans Saints at AT&T Stadium while making a tackle on running back Kendre Miller. He returned to the sideline in a sling and a soft cast.
Dallas Cowboys Used Both Injured Reserve Return Slots On Sunday
Dallas placed Liufau on injured reserve with a designation to return on Sunday, along with cornerback Devin Moore, who has a hip injury.
Players placed on injured reserve at the initial cutdown must miss at least the first 4 games. Teams may activate up to 8 players from injured reserve during the regular season, and Liufau and Moore are the first 2.
Jon Machota of The Athletic reported the injury is not considered season-ending.
Marist Liufau’s Role Before The Injury
Liufau went 87th overall in the 2024 draft out of Notre Dame and has played all 17 games in each of his first 2 seasons, with 14 career starts. He moved from off-ball linebacker to the edge this offseason and is on his third defensive coordinator in three years.
DJ Rogers Was Waived With An Injury Designation
Tight end DJ Rogers was waived/injured on Sunday, Schottenheimer said. Dallas kept 3 tight ends on the initial 53.
The Cowboys practice Tuesday in shells for an hour and a half and Wednesday for an hour and 45 minutes at 8 a.m. CT.
Dallas opens the regular season Sept. 13 at MetLife Stadium against the New York Giants. Kickoff is 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC.
