FRISCO, Texas — Von Miller said he was joking with young Dallas Cowboys teammates within two hours of arriving, and that he is still getting over being starstruck at the facility.
Miller said roughly 50 people have told him his smile is back.
“You have, that’s probably the 50th person that has told me that. That smile has come back,” Miller said. “I’ve always loved playing football. I’ve been able to play for some amazing teams, amazing quarterbacks, amazing coaches. There’s just something different about being here. And I have really good teammates. I was two hours in to being a Dallas Cowboy, and I was already joking with some of the young guys and talking about how ugly they were and talking about how their breaths stink. I’m a locker room guy. That was something so easy for me to acclimate to and get used to my teammates.”
“Coming here to the Star and seeing this amazing facility and going to the stadium, I’m glad we had that preseason game too because I was in awe,” Miller continued. “I played on the other side, but I haven’t been on this side wearing white jerseys playing for the good guys. I needed that acclimation period to just kind of get all my stardom out. It’s still times where I’m just in awe and starstruck. But every day it kind of wears off a little bit. And I settle into being a Dallas Cowboy.”
Von Miller On Kids From The Area
Miller called it living a dream and said he is appreciative of the chance to contribute to wins for the team he grew up near.
“I’m sure a lot of kids wish that. And I am living a dream. I truly am,” Miller explained. “I’m very appreciative of my opportunity here, not only to be a teammate but to contribute to wins on the football field, whether it’s sacking a quarterback, making plays.”
Von Miller’s Route To Dallas
Miller grew up in DeSoto, about 20 miles south of downtown Dallas, and wore No. 40 at DeSoto High School and at Texas A&M. He turned 37 on March 26.
Denver drafted him second overall in 2011. He spent nine seasons with the Denver Broncos, then played for the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, the Buffalo Bills from 2022 through 2024, and the Washington Commanders last season.
Miller agreed to terms with Dallas on Aug. 16 for one year at $5.5 million, with the deal able to reach $7.5 million. He first practiced Aug. 18. The Cowboys played their preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints at AT&T Stadium on Aug. 28 and lost 27-24.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Thursday that Miller’s father was the biggest Cowboys fan and that veterans who sit out camp miss the locker room.
Miller’s first regular-season snap as a Cowboy would come Sept. 13 at MetLife Stadium against the New York Giants. Kickoff is 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC.
