FRISCO, Texas — Brian Schottenheimer said he has been Tyler Guyton‘s harshest critic on consistency and that the Dallas Cowboys left tackle has changed that this summer.
Guyton was the 29th overall pick in 2024 and has 21 starts in 25 games. He missed time in each of his first two seasons.
“Every day. I’ve probably been Guyton’s biggest critic in terms of consistency. And the consistency doesn’t matter who he’s going up against. Insert name as a pass rusher, command of the offense, command of the cadence,” Schottenheimer said. “The fundamentals are way better. And there’s a different look in his eye.”
Dallas Cowboys Kept The Left Tackle Job Off The Table In The Broderick Jones Trade
Dallas acquired Broderick Jones from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday. Jones is competing with Terence Steele at right tackle, and rookie Drew Shelton is the backup on the left side.
“And that’s why I wanted to call him and make sure he understood that the decision to add a very talented player like Broderick is great for our room,” Schottenheimer explained. “It’s going to be welcomed by the room, the offensive line, but he’s done an awesome job and I wanted to make sure that he knew very clearly that this does not affect him.”
Jones played all 603 of his snaps at left tackle last season before a neck injury ended it in Week 12. He played the right side in his first two seasons in Pittsburgh.

Guyton came out of Oklahoma with limited experience at left tackle and was benched for four games as a rookie. Dallas drafted him a month after Tyron Smith left in free agency.
Schottenheimer said everyone on the line has to be able to swing once the competition sorts itself out.
Dallas kept 9 offensive linemen on the initial 53 and traded Nathan Thomas to the Houston Texans on Saturday.
The Cowboys practice Tuesday in shells for an hour and a half and Wednesday for an hour and 45 minutes at 8 a.m. CT.
Dallas opens the regular season Sept. 13 at MetLife Stadium against the New York Giants. Kickoff is 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC.
