WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Texas Rangers activated right-hander Jakob Junis from the 15-day injured list Saturday and designated left-hander Marco Gonzales for assignment.
The moves leave 39 players on the Rangers’ major league roster.
Gonzales lasted one day. Texas selected his contract from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday, two weeks after taking him off the roster.
He appeared in Friday’s 8-3 loss to the Athletics and threw one pitch. Gonzales got two outs on the play.
Earlier this season, Gonzales made two appearances for Texas and covered 6 innings. He allowed 7 hits and 1 earned run with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. Gonzales also recorded a save.
Jakob Junis Returns From Second Injured List Stint
Junis had been on the injured list since July 30, retroactive to July 29, with a left adductor strain. Texas recalled Winston Santos when Junis went on the IL.
It was his second injured list stint in July. Junis missed 11 games from July 1 through July 17 with a right hip impingement.
He became eligible to return Aug. 13. Junis threw roughly 20 pitches in a bullpen session Tuesday, with another session scheduled for Thursday before Texas made Saturday’s move.
In his first season with the Rangers, Junis is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA and 5 saves in 36 appearances. One of those appearances was a start.
Junis has allowed 36 hits and 12 earned runs over 40 innings, with 7 walks and 30 strikeouts. His 1.075 WHIP is the lowest among Rangers pitchers who have thrown at least 30 innings this season.
Texas Rangers Bullpen Gets Another Arm Back
Junis returns with Chris Martin still on the injured list. Martin has been out since July 12 with a right shoulder impingement, his third IL stint this season involving the same shoulder.
Jordan Montgomery has worked multiple innings out of the bullpen since returning from Tommy John surgery. He threw 4 innings against the Baltimore Orioles on Aug. 9 and another 2 innings Thursday after Jacob deGrom left his start against the Los Angeles Angels.
DeGrom came out after 2 innings with right triceps tightness. He is scheduled to play catch Sunday.
Nathan Eovaldi has been on the 15-day injured list since Aug. 10 with right posterior elbow inflammation. Jack Leiter threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings for Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday in his first game action since ankle surgery in June.
Texas lost 8-3 to the Athletics on Friday, its fourth straight defeat. Jake Burger hit a three-run home run in the sixth for all 3 Rangers runs.
The Rangers are 60-63 and three games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West with 39 games remaining.
Cody Bradford is listed as the Texas starter for Sunday’s 3:05 p.m. CT series finale at Sutter Health Park.
