Jacob deGrom Not Concerned After Early Exit Against Los Angeles Angels: ‘Hopefully I’ll Make My Next Start’

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Jacob deGrom was done after two innings Thursday with right triceps fatigue. The Texas Rangers lost 7-0 to the Los Angeles Angels, and deGrom said afterward he was not overly worried about the arm.

His triceps tightened during the second inning and never loosened as he expected. Texas stopped his night there.

“I’m not too concerned,” deGrom said. “Hopefully I’ll make my next [start], we’ll see. Tonight, it just — there in the second it was tight and just didn’t want to loosen up. I haven’t really had that before.”

Texas plans to have deGrom undergo an MRI Friday.

He said the area had also been slower to recover over the previous week despite the treatment already built into his routine.

“Just see how it is tomorrow and then come up with a plan,” deGrom explained. “We’ve been doing a lot to treat that area. That’s what I normally do in my routine. But this last, whatever, week, I guess, it just didn’t recover, and then I felt it tonight there in the second. They made the decision that it was not best to go forward.”

Jacob deGrom Wanted To Keep Pitching Against Los Angeles Angels

deGrom allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3. Five of the hits came in the second inning. That inning took 32 pitches. His season high is 34, set in the first inning May 22 at Angel Stadium.

The stuff was still showing up. deGrom touched 99 mph and got 10 whiffs. Statcast had each of his five pitches averaging more velocity Thursday than it has for the season.

deGrom thought he had enough to pitch the third. Manager Skip Schumaker heard triceps and shut it down.

“I wasn’t going to risk it once I heard [it was] the triceps,” Schumaker said. “Obviously, you don’t want to hear anything arm-related. You pull a guy out in the second inning, it’s concerning. But we’ll figure it out when he gets some imaging. We won’t know until they get in there.”

deGrom also put the loss on himself afterward.

“We needed to win,” deGrom said. “I take blame for tonight.”

Texas finished with 5 hits and no extra-base hits.

Texas Rangers Await Jacob deGrom MRI

Thursday was deGrom’s 23rd start of the season. He had made the first 22 without going on the injured list.

He entered the night 8-7 with a 3.87 ERA. The loss made him 8-8, and his 3 strikeouts moved him within 2 of 2,000 for his career.

His injury history is much longer than what Texas has dealt with this year. deGrom underwent his second Tommy John surgery in June 2023 and made 35 starts from 2021 through 2024. Elbow, shoulder, and forearm issues all cost him time during that stretch.

Texas did skip his final scheduled start before the All-Star break this season because of a left hip and glute issue.

Nathan Eovaldi is already on the 15-day injured list with right posterior elbow inflammation. Schumaker said after Thursday’s game that the Rangers’ starting pitching “has taken a hit.”

Jack Leiter made his first Triple-A rehab start Thursday and can come off the 60-day injured list Aug. 18.

Texas left Anaheim at 60-62 after three straight losses to finish the series. Detroit holds the final American League Wild Card spot by a half-game.

The Rangers play the Athletics next, beginning Friday in West Sacramento. Kumar Rocker starts the opener.

First pitch is at 8:40 p.m. CT at Sutter Health Park on Rangers Sports Network.
