WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Marco Gonzales is back with the Texas Rangers two weeks after the club took him off the roster. Texas selected Gonzales’ contract from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday and recalled Cody Freeman before the series opener against the Athletics.
Cameron Cauley and Ben Peoples were optioned to Round Rock. Luis Curvelo was designated for assignment. The moves leave Texas with a full 40-man roster.
Marco Gonzales Back With Texas Rangers
Gonzales was designated for assignment July 31 but stayed with the organization after clearing waivers.
That put him back at Round Rock, where he had already spent time earlier this summer. Texas signed the 34-year-old to a minor league deal in late June following his release from the San Diego Padres. His first call-up came July 21.
Gonzales made 2 appearances before being taken off the roster, both out of the bullpen. He allowed 1 earned run in 6 innings. The first one ended with a save.
Kumar Rocker threw 6 scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox on July 21, and Gonzales covered the final 3. It was the first save of Gonzales’ career.
That role is still relatively new for him. Gonzales has started 162 of his 170 major league games.
He has a 66-50 career record and a 4.16 ERA after spending time with the St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates and Texas. Gonzales will wear No. 50.
Cody Freeman Returns, Cameron Cauley And Ben Peoples Go Down
Freeman gets another opportunity after playing 7 games with Texas earlier this season. He went 4-for-17 during that stint. The 25-year-old also spent time on the injured list earlier in the year.
Freeman made his major league debut last July and hit .228 with 3 home runs and 15 RBIs as a rookie. His 2025 season at Round Rock included a .336/.382/.549 slash line, 19 home runs and 71 RBIs in 97 games.
Texas named him its Tom Grieve Minor League Player of the Year.
Cauley heads back to Triple-A after appearing in 28 games. He made his major league debut June 29 at Cleveland and tripled for his first hit.
The Rangers used Cauley all over the field during his stint. He saw time at second base, shortstop, center field and right field. Peoples had been in the bullpen since early July.
Texas acquired him from the Chicago White Sox for minor league catcher Ben Hartl on June 30. He made 14 appearances for the Rangers and allowed 4 earned runs in 14 1/3 innings.
Peoples pitched Thursday in Anaheim and worked a scoreless inning against the Los Angeles Angels.
Texas Rangers Designate Luis Curvelo For Assignment
Curvelo’s second season with Texas included 9 appearances. The 25-year-old gave up 11 earned runs in 10 1/3 innings this year. He had 6 strikeouts and 7 walks.
Curvelo signed with the Rangers before the 2025 season after coming through Seattle’s organization. He made 17 appearances as a rookie and finished 1-1 with a 5.68 ERA.
Texas has seven days to trade him, release him or put him on outright waivers.
The Rangers begin Friday at 60-62 and two games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West.
Friday’s game against the Athletics starts at 8:40 p.m. CT at Sutter Health Park.
