FRISCO, Texas — Dez Bryant said he spoke with Jaydon Blue at the Dallas Cowboys facility on Sunday, hours after Dallas waived the second-year running back.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the move Sunday. Blue has one accrued season, which sends him to waivers rather than straight into free agency. Rosters have to be down to 53 players by 5 p.m. CT Sunday, and the claims process opens at noon CT Monday.
Bryant was pulling into the facility when he saw Blue.
“I literally pulled into the facility and saw Jaydon Blue,” Bryant wrote, “so I told him, ‘Good luck this year! Wow! Keep your head up, big dog these are the moments that will define you. Keep pushing bro!'”

Blue carried 23 times for 94 yards in three preseason games, playing the opener at Seattle on Aug. 15 and leading Dallas with 15 carries for 75 yards at Arizona, also returning a kickoff 26 yards. He sat out the finale against the New Orleans Saints at AT&T Stadium, as did Javonte Williams and Malik Davis. Blue struggled with fumbles in camp in Oxnard, California.
Dallas drafted Blue 149th overall out of the Texas Longhorns in 2025. He signed a four-year rookie contract worth $4.627 million that carried a $427,068 signing bonus. He dressed for 5 games as a rookie and carried 38 times for 129 yards with 1 touchdown. That touchdown came in the Week 18 finale at the New York Giants, a game in which he ran 14 times for 64 yards.

Dallas waived Phil Mafah earlier Sunday. Mafah went 239th overall out of Clemson in the same 2025 draft class that produced Blue.
Williams is the starter. He carried 252 times for 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2025, and he signed a three-year, $24 million extension in February that includes $16 million guaranteed. Davis came to Dallas undrafted out of Florida in 2022. He ran 52 times for 250 yards and 2 touchdowns in 10 games last season, and he works as the personal protector on punts.
Dallas drafted Bryant 24th overall in 2010, and he spent eight seasons with the Cowboys. He caught 531 passes for 7,459 yards and 73 touchdowns in 113 games with the team. He made three Pro Bowls. His 16 receiving touchdowns in 2014 led the NFL that season, and he was a first-team All-Pro that year. Dallas released him in April 2018. He last played in 2020, when he appeared in 6 games for the Baltimore Ravens.
The Cowboys open the season Sept. 13 against the Giants at MetLife Stadium. Kickoff is 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC.
