ARLINGTON, Texas — Sug Sutton injured her right hand in practice earlier this week, and the Dallas Wings announced Wednesday that the injury will end her season. Dallas waived the guard the same day. The team said it will continue to lead her rehab.
Sutton signed with the Wings on June 14. In 22 games for Dallas, she averaged 2.3 points on 48.8% shooting and 1.5 assists.
Sug Sutton’s Path From Portland To The Dallas Wings
The Portland Fire picked Sutton in April’s expansion draft. She battled injuries early in the season with the Fire before returning to the court.
The Fire waived Sutton on May 21. Portland cut forward Haley Jones that same day, and Jones later rejoined Dallas on a Developmental Player contract on June 21.
Sutton’s last appearance for the Wings came Aug. 30 in a 97-71 home win over the Connecticut Sun. That was Dallas’ final game before the FIBA World Cup break.
Open Roster Spot Before The Los Angeles Sparks Game
The waiver leaves the Wings with one open roster spot. Dallas said it expects to fill it before hosting the Los Angeles Sparks at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday at College Park Center, in the Wings’ first game since the break.
Less than a month earlier, on Aug. 19, Dallas announced that rookie Azzi Fudd would undergo an arthroscopic procedure on her right knee. The WNBA then granted the Wings a Season-Ending Injury Exception, and they used it to sign guard Kitija Laksa on Aug. 25.
Fudd (right knee) and Alanna Smith (lower left leg) are listed as out on the Wings’ status report for Thursday. Dallas has beaten Los Angeles twice this season, winning 104-96 on the road June 5 and 90-82 in Arlington on July 19.
The Wings clinched a playoff berth before the break. Dallas, the New York Liberty, and the Washington Mystics all sit at 24-16 in a tie for sixth place. The Atlanta Dream and Indiana Fever are tied for fourth at 26-14, and all five teams have four regular-season games remaining.
