Dallas Cowboys Sign Juanyeh Thomas To Active Roster, Waive Caelen Carson, And Add Kyle Trask To Practice Squad

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys signed safety Juanyeh Thomas to the active roster from the practice squad Tuesday and waived cornerback Caelen Carson, the team announced. Dallas also signed quarterback Kyle Trask to the practice squad.
Thomas had appeared in three games this season on practice squad elevations, the most a player can be elevated in one season before he has to be on the active roster to play. He has played 12 defensive snaps and 65 on special teams and has 4 tackles in those games. Dallas signed him to the practice squad Sept. 30.
He returned after spending the offseason with the Indianapolis Colts, who signed him March 16. Over his first three seasons in Dallas, from 2023 to 2025, Thomas played in 36 games with three starts and had 62 tackles, five pass breakups, and a forced fumble.
Carson was a fifth-round pick out of Wake Forest in 2024. He played in 17 games with eight starts over two-plus seasons and had 45 tackles, a tackle for loss, and six pass breakups. He played in three games this season.
His role shrank as DaRon Bland returned to health and Dallas traded for Joey Porter Jr., according to DallasCowboys.com. The Cowboys had also signed Cobie Durant in free agency in March. Coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday that Durant, who has not played since a Week 2 hamstring injury, is trending to play against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.
Kyle Trask Takes Joe Milton III’s Practice Squad Spot
Trask fills the third quarterback spot behind Dak Prescott and Sam Howell. It opened when Philadelphia signed Joe Milton III to its active roster off the Dallas practice squad last week.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Trask in the second round, 64th overall, in 2021. He appeared in seven games over three seasons in Tampa Bay and completed 4 of 11 passes for 28 yards. He spent part of last season on the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad, then went to training camp with the Carolina Panthers, who released him Aug. 30.
The moves came two days after Dallas fell to 2-4 with a 23-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Philadelphia is also 2-4 after losing four straight.
Dallas Cowboys Depth Chart Lists DeMarvion Overshown As A Starter
The Cowboys’ unofficial depth chart for the Eagles game, dated Tuesday, lists linebacker DeMarvion Overshown as a starter. He has missed five games since injuring his hamstring in Week 1. Shemar James and Justin Barron are behind him. Rookie Jaishawn Barham is the other starting linebacker, with Dee Winters listed second. Schottenheimer said Monday that Winters has an Achilles strain and is likely to miss the game, and Overshown said Tuesday that he plans to play.
Thomas is listed at safety behind Markquese Bell, with Malik Hooker and Alijah Clark at the other spot. Carson does not appear on the chart. Durant is the second cornerback behind Bland, while Porter starts on the other side ahead of Shavon Revel Jr. and Ameer Speed. Caleb Downs is listed at the nickel defensive back spot.
Returner KaVontae Turpin is still listed first at kick returner and punt returner. Schottenheimer said Monday that Turpin’s rib cartilage injury is week to week and that he is unlikely to play in Philadelphia. Emari Demercado and Tyler Goodson are behind Turpin on kickoffs, and Downs and Jonathan Mingo are behind him on punts.
On the edge, Donovan Ezeiruaku and rookie Malachi Lawrence are listed as co-starters, with Rashan Gary starting on the other side ahead of Von Miller and James Houston IV. Otito Ogbonnia, Kenny Clark, and Quinnen Williams are the listed starters at defensive tackle.
Dallas plays at Philadelphia on Monday, Oct. 26, at Lincoln Financial Field. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. CT on ESPN and ABC.
