‘Week To Week’: KaVontae Turpin Unlikely, Dee Winters Likely Out For Dallas Cowboys At Philadelphia Eagles

FRISCO, Texas — Dallas Cowboys returner KaVontae Turpin is unlikely to play Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles because of a rib cartilage injury, and linebacker Dee Winters is likely to miss the game with an Achilles strain, coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday.
Both were hurt in Sunday night’s 23-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. Turpin left after returning the opening kickoff 25 yards and was ruled out in the first quarter. Winters went down with 13:36 left in the second quarter, after he had intercepted Jordan Love late in the first. Turpin’s X-rays came back clean, according to Schottenheimer.
Outside of those two, Schottenheimer said the Cowboys came out of Green Bay looking clean. He also gave a first read on linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, who has missed five games with a hamstring injury.
“Winters, Achilles strain, likely [to miss] this week. Turp, like I said last night, rib cartilage, will be week to week, unlikely for Philadelphia,” Schottenheimer said. “Everybody else, I think, is looking clean, and then we’ll see how Demo works back into practice this week. But we’re hoping he returns this week.”
KaVontae Turpin’s Rib Injury And The Dallas Cowboys Return Game
Turpin is an All-Pro returner on both kickoffs and punts, according to DallasCowboys.com. Running back Tyler Goodson took over on kickoffs Sunday and had 5 returns for 122 yards. Receiver Jonathan Mingo returned 3 punts for 18 yards, including a 16-yarder to the Green Bay 46 that set up Dallas’ first touchdown after Green Bay went three-and-out to open the second half.
Schottenheimer called that sequence complementary football and gave Mingo credit for catching punts in windy conditions. The staff will look at different options in the return game this week, he said.
“I thought Goody did a nice job on some of the kick returns. We’ll look at some different things back there, how you want to do that. We usually do one with Turp. We’ll see kind of how that goes,” Schottenheimer said. “But, yeah, again, worth pointing out, Jonathan, that was a gusty night.”
“The wind was kind of all over the place, and I thought he did a really, really good job going back there,” Schottenheimer continued. “I think it’s the first time he’s ever caught one in a real NFL game.”
Winters has been part of a linebacker room already thin before Sunday. Rookie Jaishawn Barham has worn the green dot since Overshown went down in Week 1, and linebackers Shemar James and Justin Barron have taken on bigger roles, with Barron going in on a couple of passing situations at Green Bay.
“I’m thrilled that hopefully Demo’s coming back. And, again, we’re getting a lot of guys repped. Shemar James, like I said, is doing a really good job,” Schottenheimer said. “Justin Barron last night did a really good job. We put him in on a couple passing situations. They actually tried him on a little wheel route immediately when he came in the game, and he played it beautifully.”
“So that’s a position that normally gets dinged up and beat up a little bit, and both those guys, Shemar and Justin, have played really well for us,” Schottenheimer added.
Cowboys Updates On DeMarvion Overshown, Cobie Durant, And Joey Porter Jr.
Overshown said Tuesday that he plans to play Monday. He has worked into team drills over the last couple of weeks.
“I definitely feel that that’s the plan, so I’m ready for practice,” Overshown said. “It’s crazy. We play on Monday now, so now I got to wait an extra day. But I’m excited.”
Hamstrings are hard to predict, Schottenheimer said, but the staff feels good about Overshown’s chances this week and plans to bring him along slowly in his first game back.
“If he comes back and plays, which we hope and expect, then we’ll be smart with how many reps,” Schottenheimer explained. “It’ll be kind of a ramp up as well for him. And, again, that’s where the linebacker depth, I think, is important.”
Cornerback Cobie Durant has not played since he injured his hamstring in Dallas’ Week 2 win over the Washington Commanders. Durant, who signed with Dallas in free agency in March, has been on the field this week, and Schottenheimer said he is trending to play.
“Trending up. Again, get him moving a little bit over these next couple days and see, but he’s trending to play,” Schottenheimer said.
Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. was in and out of the game Sunday after he rolled his ankle again. Porter had missed the Week 5 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with an illness. Against Green Bay, he was targeted four times and did not allow a catch, according to DallasCowboys.com.
“More of it was the ankle. He rolled it again, so he came out. And, again, I just love the way the guy played last night,” Schottenheimer said. “But, again, yeah, these guys feel their bodies pretty well. And he got it taped up and went back.”
Dallas plays at Philadelphia on Monday, Oct. 26, at Lincoln Financial Field. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. CT on ESPN and ABC.
