WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Texas Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi has made progress with the right posterior elbow inflammation that put him on the injured list, but the club does not have a date for him to play catch.
Range of motion in Eovaldi’s elbow has improved, and some of the swelling has come down, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Texas placed Eovaldi on the 15-day injured list on Aug. 10, retroactive to Aug. 9. Right-hander Ben Peoples was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock in the corresponding move.
Eovaldi is eligible to return Aug. 25.
Nathan Eovaldi Felt Discomfort While Playing Catch
The elbow began bothering Eovaldi while he was playing catch Aug. 9. Imaging that day showed the inflammation.
His previous start came Aug. 7 against the Baltimore Orioles at Globe Life Field. Eovaldi allowed 1 earned run on 4 hits over 5 1/3 innings in a 2-1 Rangers win. He walked 2 and struck out 2.
His velocity was down in the outing. Eovaldi’s cutter averaged 88.8 mph after averaging 90.3 mph this season. His four-seam fastball averaged 92.9 mph, compared with a 94.5 mph season average.
Eovaldi also spent time on the injured list in 2025 with right posterior elbow inflammation. Texas placed him on the 15-day IL on June 1 of that season, retroactive to May 29. The Rangers have said the current injury is not the same.
Nathan Eovaldi Leads Texas Rangers In Wins And Innings
Eovaldi has made 22 starts this season. He is 10-9 with a 4.21 ERA over 132 2/3 innings, with 137 strikeouts and 32 walks. His 10 wins and 132 2/3 innings lead Texas.
Since the start of July, Eovaldi has a 5.01 ERA. He has allowed 7 home runs in 32 1/3 innings during that stretch.
The 36-year-old is in the second season of the three-year, $75 million extension he signed with Texas in December 2024. This is his 16th major league season. Eovaldi has won at least 10 games in each of his four seasons with the Rangers.
Cal Quantrill and Jordan Montgomery were pitching out of the bullpen when Eovaldi went on the injured list. Quantrill is 4-4 with a 3.44 ERA in 25 appearances, including 8 starts, over 70 2/3 innings.
Texas Rangers Also Without Other Starters
Jacob deGrom left Thursday’s start against the Los Angeles Angels after 2 innings with right triceps tightness. He is scheduled to play catch Sunday.
Jack Leiter returned to game action Thursday with Triple-A Round Rock. He threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings in his first appearance since undergoing ankle surgery in June.
Texas lost 8-3 to the Athletics on Friday for its fourth straight defeat. The Rangers are 60-63 and three games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West.
Cody Bradford is listed as the Texas starter for Sunday’s 3:05 p.m. CT series finale at Sutter Health Park.
