ARLINGTON, Texas — Justin Foscue said Cal Quantrill does not get the credit he deserves.
Foscue drove in the first run of a 6-0 Texas Rangers win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night at Globe Life Field, and Quantrill allowed 2 singles and 2 walks over 7 scoreless innings.
“No, I definitely don’t think so,” Foscue told Rangers Sports Network. “Right now, he’s going through a stretch where he’s been extremely dominant and helping us win baseball games. Tonight, he did his thing, seven shutout. Guys played good defense behind him, and we had collective offensive approach and put some runs on the board. But man, he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He’s done a phenomenal job for us all year long and especially as of late, and we need him down the stretch here.”
Justin Foscue Drives In The First Run
Wyatt Langford doubled into the left field corner in the fourth inning and scored on Foscue’s single to left off Shane McClanahan. Foscue entered Thursday batting .258/.322/.500 with 11 home runs and 27 RBIs in 81 games, and he homered twice on the homestand.
Cal Quantrill’s Season With The Texas Rangers
Quantrill improved to 7-5. He entered the night with a 3.01 ERA over 28 appearances, 11 of them starts, and 89 2/3 innings, and he has a 1.25 ERA over 8 outings since July 28 at Tampa Bay.
Quantrill was named the Rangers’ Player of the Month for August, an award voted on by the media members and broadcasters who cover the team on a regular basis. He posted a 1.45 ERA over 31 innings last month. It was his first monthly award with Texas.
Texas signed Quantrill to a minor league contract on Jan. 29 and opened the season with him at Triple-A Round Rock. The Rangers selected his contract on April 15, and injuries to Jack Leiter and Nathan Eovaldi later moved him into the rotation.
How The Texas Rangers Finished The Shutout
Jakob Junis and Chase Silseth finished the combined three-hitter. It was the 13th shutout of the season for Texas and the eighth time Tampa Bay has been shut out.
Ezequiel Duran flared a ball to right in the fifth inning that scored Logan O’Hoppe, and Corey Seager followed with a two-run homer to right. Texas added 2 runs in the eighth inning when Evan Carter tripled home Langford and scored on Jake Burger‘s sacrifice fly.
Foscue was the 14th overall pick in the 2020 draft and debuted on April 5, 2024. He has appeared at second base, first base, and designated hitter this season.
McClanahan gave up 4 runs in 5 innings and fell to 10-7. The left-hander has not finished 6 innings in a start since July 8.
The Rays are 83-57 and lead the American League East by 3 games over the New York Yankees. They have lost 10 straight games in Arlington, and their last win at Globe Life Field came on June 2, 2022.
Texas is 70-71, one-half game behind Cleveland for the American League’s final wild-card spot. Friday’s game is at 7:05 p.m. CT at Globe Life Field on Rangers Sports Network, with right-hander Trevor Williams lined up as the Rangers’ opener.
