FRISCO, Texas — Camden Brown and Jonathan Mingo are not looking at the preseason as a roster spot, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Joe Milton III said Tuesday at The Star. Milton said both receivers come to him between plays in practice asking what he saw.
Milton said he has competed for a job going back to high school and that he enjoys picking other quarterbacks’ brains during a competition.
“I’ve seen a lot from those two. But from OTA, from when Cam got here, and since the longest I’ve known Mingo, they both work hard. And they both, I don’t think they’re looking at it as a roster spot,” Milton said. “I think this is going out there to make the best of their opportunities, and that’s what they do best.”
“Those guys work real hard, man. I could keep saying that over and over, but the biggest thing is their mindset and the want to. They want the ball,” Milton continued. “They come to me between plays, during practice, and they just like, what did I see? They ask me all those questions, and they just really want the ball, so I try to do my best and make sure they get the ball.”
What Camden Brown And Jonathan Mingo Have Done
Brown caught both Dallas touchdowns in the preseason opener at Seattle on Aug. 15, a 39-yard catch from Sam Howell and a 2-yard catch from Milton. He caught a 70-yard pass from Milton on a scramble play at Arizona on Saturday night that set up a rushing touchdown one play later. Brown signed with Dallas as an undrafted rookie out of Georgia Southern.
Mingo caught a 53-yard touchdown from Milton in the second quarter at Arizona, his first with the Cowboys. He also played 7 special teams snaps in that game.
Brian Schottenheimer said Monday that the touch Milton showed on the double move to Mingo and on the scramble play to Brown was what stood out on the tape.
The Dallas Cowboys Receiver Room
Dallas Morning News beat writer Calvin Watkins kept six receivers on his fourth 53-man roster projection and included Brown.
CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are the top two receivers on the roster. Milton has completed 21-of-28 for 286 yards with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions this preseason.
What Is Left Before Dallas Cowboys Cuts
Dallas practices in front of fans at The Star again Wednesday. The preseason closes Friday against the New Orleans Saints at AT&T Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m. CT on CBS.
Rosters must be at 53 players by 5 p.m. CT on Sunday, Aug. 30. Waiver claims are due at noon CT the next day.
