DALLAS — Dallas has beaten the New York Giants in 16 of their last 17 meetings. John Harbaugh told a room of Giants season ticket holders in May that he wants a team good enough to end that, and on the Shan & RJ show on 105.3 The Fan Tuesday morning, five days before the two teams open the season, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones answered him.
A fan at the Giants town hall at the Beacon Theatre had asked Harbaugh about New York’s record against Dallas, Philadelphia, and Washington. Harbaugh said he did not care about any of it, then said a good practice would move the Giants one step closer to being good enough to beat the Cowboys, using a vulgarity. The room broke into a “Cowboys suck” chant, according to the New York Post. Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux said of Dallas, “I hate them.” CeeDee Lamb answered on Instagram with “that’s cute,” per FOX Sports.
Jerry Jones On John Harbaugh Joining The NFC East
Facing Harbaugh twice a year is the part Jones says gave him a funny feeling.
“I have as much respect for him and his family, his brothers, his father,” Jones said. “They are a football legacy family, and they’ve had a wealth of experience in a sport that I love and I’m a student of. So I’m glad to see him a part of the NFC East, but I’m not glad to see him sitting over on the other side, not competing against him. They are formidable, they being his both brothers. But I’ve always thought that Baltimore outcoached him since he had been the coach there. And so I had a funny feeling about when he got there with the Giants and we were going to have to face him two times a year. He’s an outstanding coach.”
Harbaugh spent 18 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and won Super Bowl XLVII. His brother, Jim Harbaugh, coaches the Los Angeles Chargers, and their father, Jack Harbaugh, won a Division I-AA national title at Western Kentucky in 2002. John Harbaugh has one brother.
New York hired Harbaugh on Jan. 17 after firing Brian Daboll during a 2-8 start. Dennard Wilson came from the Tennessee Titans as defensive coordinator on Jan. 25. The Giants have not won the NFC East since 2011 and are 5-18-1 in the division over the past five seasons.
Jerry Jones On The Dallas Cowboys’ NFC East Rivals
Six of the Cowboys’ 17 games come against Washington, New York, and Philadelphia, and Jones rates all three the same.
“I wish that I could say Philadelphia, but Washington keeps me from saying that,” Jones explained. “And some of the days that I have that make me really grit my teeth are against Washington and Philadelphia as well as those Giants. It is absolutely one of the biggest enjoyments, or biggest challenges, or best things that I feel, is to think that we got to play those guys two times a year. Washington, New York, Philadelphia, they’re equal to me in terms of the rivalry.”
Dallas leads the all-time series with the Giants 78-48-2 since 1960. Sunday is the 13th time the franchises have opened a season against each other and the eighth in the past 15 years. The Cowboys have won 11 of those 12 previous openers.
Last season split. Dallas took a 40-37 overtime game in Week 2 at AT&T Stadium. New York won the Week 18 rematch 34-17 at MetLife Stadium, where Jaxson Dart accounted for 262 total yards and threw two touchdowns.
New York finished 4-13, Washington 5-12, and Philadelphia 11-6.
Sunday will be the 14th Cowboys-Giants game in NBC’s Sunday Night Football package, second only to Cowboys-Eagles. Kickoff at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is set for 7:20 p.m. CT.
