DALLAS — Any addition the Dallas Cowboys make from here would come on defense, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday morning on the Shan & RJ show on 105.3 The Fan. He called the running back, receiver, tight end, and quarterback rooms strong.
Dallas allowed 511 points last season and finished 7-9-1.
Jerry Jones On Where The Dallas Cowboys Would Add
Jones counted the offensive rooms one by one, then landed on the other side of the ball. He counts the Broderick Jones trade as the big move already made.
“You could look for it to be defensively,” Jones said. “We’ve made our big move there for us with bringing Broderick Jones in, and I wouldn’t look for us to do something differently. We’ve really got our running backs in great shape. I think receivers in great shape. That tight end room is really strong, and that quarterback room is really, really strong. We were really excited over getting Milton back. So when you look at all of that, you probably could see more than likely depth on defense. But defense would be the place.”
Joe Milton III was released on Aug. 31 and returned on the practice squad two days later. Sam Howell holds the backup job behind Dak Prescott. Milton has thrown 53 career passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Broderick Jones trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Aug. 29 was an offensive line move. Dallas sent third- and sixth-round picks in 2027 and received Jones and a 2027 fourth-rounder.
The rooms Jones called strong carry their own numbers. Javonte Williams re-signed on a three-year, $24 million deal in February. CeeDee Lamb caught 75 passes for 1,077 yards last season, and George Pickens caught 93 for 1,429 and nine touchdowns. Jake Ferguson caught 82 passes and made his second Pro Bowl.
Jerry Jones On Von Miller’s Role In The Dallas Cowboys Defense
Von Miller signed with Dallas in free agency last month. Jones relayed what Miller told him about the sack totals that get called a good year.
“He mentioned, in smiling, I’m sure, that I can do that in my sleep,” Jones said. “He’s an outstanding player. He can really do what we need him to do, and that is give a lot of attention to what’s coming with him out there on that pass rush. So I’m excited about what he can do, and I think he’ll really be in a position to really have some serious numbers out there. And I’m glad we got him.”
Sack production, for Jones, is worth less as a count than as a result.
“Just by the nature of sacks, when you look at the number of them that the top players get, they don’t get them every play,” Jones explained. “And they get them a lot of times when it’s the meaningfulness of a turnover. Make them kick. Make them give up possession. He’s very capable of doing that.”
Miller wears No. 40 in Dallas. The Cowboys also traded for edge rusher Rashan Gary in March and drafted edge rusher Malachi Lawrence in the first round. Christian Parker is calling the defense for the first time after two seasons on the Philadelphia Eagles staff.
Milton remains on the practice squad, where any team can sign him to its active roster and Dallas can elevate him up to three times this season.
