WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Texas Rangers have not crossed Wednesday off the schedule for Jacob deGrom.
His right triceps tightened during Thursday’s start in Anaheim. Imaging Friday produced no new findings, and deGrom remained day-to-day Saturday. He had not yet resumed playing catch, but manager Skip Schumaker said deGrom felt better after meeting with the medical staff.
Wednesday would be his next turn in the rotation, against the Washington Nationals at Globe Life Field.
“I guess it’s possible,” Schumaker said. “I don’t know how realistic it is, but I think it’s always possible. We haven’t ruled it out completely.”
Texas improved to 61-63 with Saturday night’s 5-3 win over the Athletics.
Texas Rangers Have Not Ruled Out Jacob deGrom for Wednesday
Thursday lasted only 2 innings for deGrom in a 7-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels got 5 of their 6 hits against him during a 32-pitch second inning, when the triceps began to tighten.
deGrom finished at 53 pitches, 35 for strikes. His line was 2 innings, 6 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, and 3 strikeouts. The loss dropped him to 8-8.
Texas can move his turn back if he is not ready for Wednesday. Schumaker said Saturday that deGrom’s conversation with the medical staff went well.
“Things can change in a hurry, obviously, with the way Jacob feels, but he feels pretty good,” Schumaker explained. “That was a really good conversation with the medical department and with Jacob.”
Jacob deGrom Has Made 23 Starts This Season
Through 23 starts, deGrom is 8-8 with a 3.95 ERA in 120 2/3 innings. He has struck out 147, walked 31, and posted a 1.169 WHIP.
The triceps issue is his second health interruption this summer. A hip and glute issue kept him from taking his final turn before the All-Star break. He next pitched July 20 against the Chicago White Sox, working 4 2/3 innings.
Thursday was deGrom’s first start this season that ended before the fourth inning.
Tommy John surgery limited his first two seasons with Texas to 9 starts combined. He returned for 30 starts in 2025, going 12-8 with a 2.97 ERA and making his fifth All-Star team. deGrom has not been on the injured list since that Tommy John rehab ended.
He signed with Texas for five years and $185 million in December 2022. deGrom is earning $38 million this season, and the contract is guaranteed through 2027 with a mutual option for 2028.
Texas Rangers Rotation Remains Short-Handed
Nathan Eovaldi is already on the 15-day injured list with right posterior elbow inflammation. Texas has not set a date for him to resume throwing.
Jack Leiter rejoined the Rangers in West Sacramento after throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings for Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday. He is on the 60-day injured list following arthroscopic surgery to repair a right ankle posterior impingement.
Texas now has to decide whether Leiter needs another rehab start or is ready to be activated.
Cal Quantrill and Jordan Montgomery are also on the active roster.

Sunday’s finale against the Athletics is set for 3:05 p.m. CT at Sutter Health Park. The Rangers then return to Globe Life Field for three games against Washington beginning Tuesday.
