EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants and left guard Jon Runyan Jr. agreed to a two-year, $22 million extension Sunday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal includes $21.5 million guaranteed and runs through 2028, a week before New York hosts the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 13 to begin the regular season.
It was the second Giants extension of the afternoon. New York agreed with backup quarterback Jameis Winston on a two-year, $13 million deal 47 minutes earlier.
Runyan Jr. had been going into the final season of a three-year, $30 million contract. He signed that deal in March 2024, his first year of free agency, and it carried $17 million guaranteed. No guarantees remained on it entering this season. He was set to count $11.75 million against the 2026 cap on a $9 million base salary, and his base salary was scheduled to become guaranteed shortly before Week 1. Releasing him would have cleared roughly $9 million.
Jon Runyan Jr.’s Career Before The Extension
Green Bay selected Runyan Jr. in the sixth round of the 2020 draft. He went 192nd overall out of Michigan, where he played left tackle for the Wolverines before moving inside as a pro. He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors as a junior. He earned them again as a senior. Runyan Jr. played four seasons with the Packers. He is in his third with the Giants.
Runyan Jr., 29, has played 96 career games with 79 starts. He started all 16 games he played at guard for New York last season. He did not miss a game in his four years in Green Bay.
His father, Jon Runyan Sr., also played at Michigan and started at right tackle in the NFL for the Houston Oilers, Tennessee Titans, and Philadelphia Eagles. The elder Runyan made the Pro Bowl in 2002 and did not miss a game from 1997 through 2008.
Giants Offensive Line Entering Week 1 Against The Dallas Cowboys
New York kept nine offensive linemen on its initial 53-man roster. Francis Mauigoa, the 10th overall pick in April, is set to open at right guard alongside Runyan Jr. at left guard. Andrew Thomas and Jermaine Eluemunor are the tackles, with John Michael Schmitz Jr. at center.
The Giants added interior depth over the summer and again this week. They signed guard/center Lucas Patrick and former Baltimore Ravens left guard Daniel Faalele, though both were released Aug. 30 in the cut to 53. New York signed Geno VanDeMark to the practice squad Sept. 2 and Kingsley Eguakun and Darian Kinnard on Sept. 1.
General manager Joe Schoen came out of the cut to 53 feeling good about both sides of the ball and the special teams. The difficult part, he said, was the depth, and the calls on the top 70 players in camp.
“We’ll continue to look to upgrade the roster and even the practice squad, cause the practice squad now is truly an extension of the active roster,” Schoen said. “Your ability to bring guys up and down. So again, we’ve had a good camp, I like where we are as a team.”
Schoen would not predict how the season plays out.
“We’re going to be prepared. We’re going to be physical. You’re going to have to go 60 minutes to compete with us,” Schoen said.
The Giants and Cowboys kick off at 7:20 p.m. CT on Sunday, Sept. 13, at MetLife Stadium on NBC. New York then plays at the Los Angeles Rams on Monday, Sept. 21.
