AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Longhorns left tackle Trevor Goosby is good to go for Saturday’s season opener against Texas State, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Thursday, 17 days after the senior went down with a non-contact knee injury in practice.
Goosby was hurt during an Aug. 17 practice in Austin. An MRI the next morning showed a bone bruise in his left knee and no structural damage. Goosby returned to practice on Monday for the first time since the injury, and the staff added to his workload each day through Thursday, Sarkisian said on a Zoom call with reporters.
Steve Sarkisian Details Trevor Goosby’s Return to Practice
Sarkisian said the medical staff, not the schedule, decided when Goosby came back to the practice field.
“It was about him getting back out to practice. I thought he had a really good practice on Monday,” Sarkisian said. “We increased his workload on Tuesday. He had a really good practice Tuesday, came back good. We increased his workload Wednesday, he looked good again. We increased his workload even more today, looked good again. So he’s kind of been building throughout the week.”
Goosby, a 6-foot-7, 325-pound senior from Melissa, started all 13 games at left tackle in 2025 and was a first-team All-SEC selection by the league’s coaches. He was named a first-team preseason All-American by The Associated Press on Aug. 18, one of four Longhorns on the first team, and by Walter Camp. He is on the preseason watch lists for the Outland Trophy and the Lombardi Award. In 30 career games, he has 15 starts.
Goosby missed the scrimmage reps the rest of the offensive line got during the final two weeks of camp.
“I thought he’s been playing with really good pad level, good physicality,” Sarkisian said. “I think that he needs to play football and linemen are really the most important ones that they need that physicality.”
Texas Will Monitor Goosby’s Conditioning in the Heat
The forecast high in Austin on Saturday is 96 degrees, and kickoff at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN. Reserve linemen Andre Cojoe and Dylan Sikorski will get extended snaps because of the field temperature, Sarkisian said, per the Austin American-Statesman.
“We have to monitor the conditioning probably more than anything under the conditions that we’re going to be playing in Saturday with the heat,” Sarkisian said. “And so that’s something that we’ll be watching, just so that he’s not getting fatigued and not playing to his capability.”
Andre Cojoe Will Get Snaps at Left Tackle
Cojoe, a 6-foot-6, 348-pound senior from Grand Prairie, took the first-team reps at left tackle after Goosby went down. He played at Mansfield Timberview and signed with Texas in the 2023 class as a three-star recruit. He appeared in 4 games in 2024, then tore his ACL in an August 2025 practice while competing for the starting right tackle job and missed the entire 2025 season.
Sarkisian plans to get Cojoe on the field Saturday whether or not Goosby holds up.
“Trevor’s good to go, but yes, I would like to see Andre play in this game as well,” Sarkisian said. “He’s been practicing extremely well, so I think it’d be an opportunity for both those guys, Trevor, to get back going. You know, he didn’t have some of those scrimmage reps that the other guys got. I don’t know. (We’ve) got to monitor his conditioning with the heat.”
“I do think Andre’s had a great camp, and Andre deserves his opportunities to play as well,” Sarkisian added.
Left guard Laurence Seymore III also missed time in camp with an injury and returned to practice this week. Sarkisian said Seymore is good to go for Saturday as well, according to the Statesman.
Texas opens the season ranked No. 5 in the AP Top 25. The Longhorns went 10-3 in 2025, 6-2 in the SEC, and beat Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. Ohio State, ranked No. 1, visits Austin on Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
