EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano said Friday he is not sure the New York Giants are all the way sold on Cam Skattebo as their starting running back, nine days before Skattebo returns from a dislocated ankle against the Dallas Cowboys.
Graziano made the comments on ESPN during a preview of the Sept. 13 Sunday night opener at MetLife Stadium, alongside analyst Harry Douglas and former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum. The question put to him was whether Skattebo’s offseason backflips had drawn too much attention to himself.
Graziano does not blame Skattebo for any of that. His hesitation is about the player, and it runs through the roster moves the new staff has made since the spring.
“I’m the wrong guy to ask. I’m Gen X,” Graziano said. “We were not raised to say that calling attention to yourself was a great thing that everyone should do. But we now live in a world where it is, and that’s the way these guys are brought up. So I don’t necessarily blame him for any of that.”
“I will say, independent of that, Cam Skattebo is a player, Mike T has mentioned, has played eight games in the NFL,” Graziano continued. “It’s a new coaching staff. We heard a lot before the draft about them being serious about Jeremiyah Love if he fell to them. They just signed Najee Harris, a veteran who played for John Harbaugh’s brother last year. I’m just not sure. Cam Skattebo probably gets first crack at being the Giants’ starting running back this year, but I’m just not sure that they’re all the way sold on the player at this point, and maybe they need to see more just sort of on the field.”
Jeremiyah Love Went Third Overall
Jeremiyah Love never reached the Giants. The Arizona Cardinals took the Notre Dame running back with the No. 3 pick in April, two spots before New York picked at No. 5. Love ran for 1,372 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2025 and won the Doak Walker Award.
Najee Harris signed a one-year contract on Aug. 18. He tore his left Achilles three games into the 2025 season with the Los Angeles Chargers, where Jim Harbaugh is the head coach. In four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Harris carried 1,112 times for 4,373 yards and 28 touchdowns, and he ran for at least 1,000 yards in each of those four seasons.
After the signing, Giants coach John Harbaugh called Harris a downhill, physical runner he had played against a lot, per CBS Sports.
Skattebo Is Listed First, With Three Names Behind Him
On the unofficial depth chart for the preseason finale against the Jets, the Giants listed Skattebo as the starter, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported. Tyrone Tracy Jr., Harris, and Devin Singletary were listed together on the next line.
Tracy led the Giants in carries in each of the last two seasons. In 15 games in 2025, he ran 176 times for 740 yards and 2 touchdowns and caught 36 passes for 288 yards and 2 touchdowns. In the Week 18 win over Dallas, he ran 18 times for 103 yards and a touchdown and caught 8 passes for 56 yards. Tracy left the preseason finale with a neck injury and practiced in a non-contact jersey on Tuesday.
Singletary has 4,923 career rushing yards over seven seasons with Buffalo, Houston, and New York.
Skattebo was a fourth-round pick, No. 105 overall, in 2025. In 8 games before the Oct. 26 injury at Philadelphia, he ran 101 times for 410 yards and 5 touchdowns and caught 24 passes for 207 yards and 2 touchdowns.
