FRISCO, Texas — Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday that fans will see roster adjustments after the team spent the three days following Thursday’s 24-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers reviewing all three units. He would not say what those changes will be, citing competitive advantage.
The first change was announced Monday, when Schottenheimer said the Cowboys hired Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant to support defensive coordinator Christian Parker. Dallas is 2-3 and has allowed 136 points through five games.
Brian Schottenheimer Says Some Cowboys Changes Will Be ‘Noticeable’
“I’m not going to get into a bunch of them. Obviously, there’s a competitive advantage, but there will be some roster adjustments that you guys will see. Some will be more noticeable than others, and some will be subtle as you look at it. But it was a very beneficial weekend, I’ll say,” Schottenheimer said. “A lot of long hours spent, a lot of long conversations, a lot of deep dives where we were looking at everything from all three units and came away with a lot of what we would say really good solutions and ideas that now it’s about implementing. And that began today.”
Schottenheimer Says Cowboys Found ‘Really Good Solutions’ During Weekend Review
After Thursday’s loss, Schottenheimer said he would spend countless hours stepping back and looking at all five games. He said Monday that the Pettine hire had been discussed for a long time, and that the weekend produced other solutions.
“Yeah, I mean, this is something, like I said, this specific thing is something we’ve been talking about for a long time. I think there’s a lot of solutions that we’ve come up with this weekend, long three days, which is what you should do when you’re not playing or coaching to the standard that you expect,” Schottenheimer explained.
Dallas gave up 241 rushing yards to Tampa Bay, turned the ball over three times, and lost the time of possession battle 39:21 to 20:39. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said after the game that he would trade future draft capital for the right player, and that the season was not “folding the tents.”
Dak Prescott said Thursday that he planned to bring Schottenheimer ideas for the offense, things the Cowboys already do that he believes they can increase the volume of. He said they were not monumental changes.
The NFC East went winless in Week 5, leaving Dallas 1.5 games behind the New York Giants at 3-1-1. The Cowboys visit the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, Oct. 18 at Lambeau Field, with kickoff set for 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC.
