FRISCO, Texas — Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer called LT Overton one of the most natural interior pass rushers he has been around, and said the rookie is still learning the techniques Dallas wants against combination blocks and in run defense.
Overton’s sack at Arizona on Aug. 22 was an effort sack, set up by Tyrus Wheat, who kept his rush from going past the quarterback.
“Great sack. The other night, it was an effort sack set up by T. Wheat, who did a great job with his rush of not going past the quarterback,” Schottenheimer said. “I would say LT is one of the most natural pass rushers I’ve been around for an interior guy. We saw that at Alabama. He’s still learning some of the techniques that we believe in terms of playing combination blocks and run defense and things like that. But he’s been elite in a lot of ways rushing the passer. And he’s a guy we’re very, very high on. And were high on in the fourth round when we took him. And he’s having a great camp and we’ll see what we decide to do with him on game day.”
Where LT Overton Fit In The Dallas Cowboys Draft
The Dallas Cowboys took Overton at No. 137 overall in April, a compensatory fourth-round pick acquired from Philadelphia and the third of three fourth-rounders Dallas held. He was the third of three fourth-round picks Dallas held, after Drew Shelton at No. 112 and Devin Moore at No. 114.
Dallas rebuilt the front this offseason around Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams on the interior, with Rashan Gary and Donovan Ezeiruaku outside. The Cowboys traded Osa Odighizuwa to San Francisco for the third-round pick that became linebacker Jaishawn Barham, then drafted UCF edge rusher Malachi Lawrence at No. 23 overall. Ezeiruaku had 2.0 sacks over nine starts as a rookie in 2025.
Dallas sat 29 players in Arizona and still finished the game, and the Cowboys have not allowed more than 13 points in either preseason outing.
Tyrus Wheat’s Return To Dallas Cowboys
Wheat signed with Dallas on March 11 for a second stint with the team. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State in 2023, spent two seasons with the Cowboys, and played 15 games for Detroit in 2025 with 1.5 sacks. He has 2.0 sacks across 35 career games.
Dallas allowed 511 points in 2025, 30.1 per game, which ranked last in the NFL. Christian Parker replaced Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator and has moved the Cowboys to a 3-4 alignment. Through two preseason games Dallas has allowed fewer than 14 points in each, winning 17-7 at Seattle and 34-13 at Arizona.
Friday’s finale against New Orleans kicks off at 7 p.m. CT at AT&T Stadium and airs on CBS locally. Rosters must be at 53 players by 5 p.m. CT Sunday, Aug. 30. The Cowboys open the regular season Sunday, Sept. 13, at the New York Giants at 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC.
