DALLAS — The Dallas Cowboys are 2-0 in the preseason for the first time since 2007. Brad Sham brought up that season on 105.3 The Fan in a clip the station posted early Sunday morning, hours after Dallas beat the Arizona Cardinals 34-13.
Sham’s benchmark is the last Cowboys team to win a Super Bowl. By that measure, the 2007 group that went 13-3 and took the NFC’s No. 1 seed is the best Dallas has put on the field since.
“In my mind, the 2007 team was the best team they’ve had since the last Super Bowl team that didn’t get where they wanted to go,” Sham said. “The best. They were the No. 1 seed, they were 13-3… I think something’s happening. They haven’t looked like this in preseason in 19 years. So, do with that what you will.”
Sham has had the play-by-play job since 1984, when Verne Lundquist left for CBS. He came to the Cowboys broadcasts in 1976 as Lundquist’s analyst. Dallas named the home radio booth at AT&T Stadium after him in 2018.
The 2007 Dallas Cowboys Season
Wade Phillips coached the 2007 team in his first year replacing Bill Parcells. Dallas won the NFC East for the first time since 1998, earned a first-round bye, and sent 13 players to the Pro Bowl. Tony Romo made the Pro Bowl for the second time that season, and DeMarcus Ware was a first-team All-Pro. The New York Giants ended it 21-17 in the Divisional Round on Jan. 13, 2008, at Texas Stadium, then won Super Bowl XLII.
Those 13 regular season wins are the franchise record, matched by the 1992 Super Bowl team and the 2016 team that also went 13-3. Since 1995, Dallas hasn’t played in an NFC Championship Game.
Dallas Cowboys Preseason And Schedule
Dallas opened this preseason on Aug. 15 at Lumen Field with a 17-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks, the defending Super Bowl champions. Camden Brown caught both Cowboys touchdowns, taking a 39-yard pass from Sam Howell in the second quarter and a 2-yard fade from Joe Milton III to open the third. That was the first preseason-opening win for Dallas since 2017.
Milton threw three touchdown passes in the first half at Arizona. He and Howell are competing to back up Dak Prescott, who has not appeared in a preseason game since 2019. Brown is competing with Jonathan Mingo for a spot behind the top four receivers.
On Saturday, Dallas held out 29 players at State Farm Stadium, ran for 175 yards on 34 carries, and gained 413 total yards. Christian Parker took over as defensive coordinator in January at age 34, the youngest in franchise history. The unit he inherited allowed 511 points last season, the most in the NFL, and finished last in passing yards allowed at 251.5 per game.
The preseason finale is Friday against the New Orleans Saints at AT&T Stadium, kickoff at 7 p.m. CT on CBS. The roster has 91 players and must be reduced to 53 before the opener. Week 1 is Sept. 13 at MetLife Stadium against the New York Giants, kickoff at 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC, with radio on 105.3 The Fan.
