AUSTIN, Texas — ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Saturday morning on College GameDay that Texas Longhorns left tackle Trevor Goosby is ready to go against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Thamel also reported that offensive lineman Cole Hutson is practicing after winning a temporary restraining order but will sit while the school monitors his court case.
The show broadcast from campus, per an ESPN press release, ahead of the 6:30 p.m. CT kickoff.
Trevor Goosby Cleared After Bone Bruise
Goosby played 52 snaps in the 59-7 win over Texas State on Sept. 5, according to the GameDay report.
He was hurt in an Aug. 17 practice in Austin. The injury was noncontact. An MRI the next morning showed a bone bruise in his left knee and no structural damage. Goosby returned to practice on Aug. 31 and the staff added to his workload each day that week.
Sarkisian said the medical staff, not the schedule, decided when Goosby came back to the field.
“It was about him getting back out to practice. I thought he had a really good practice on Monday,” Sarkisian said on a Zoom call with reporters ahead of the opener. “We increased his workload on Tuesday. He had a really good practice Tuesday, came back good.”
Goosby missed the scrimmage reps the rest of the offensive line took during the final two weeks of camp.
“I thought he’s been playing with really good pad level, good physicality,” Sarkisian said. “I think that he needs to play football and linemen are really the most important ones that they need that physicality.”
The 6-foot-7, 325-pound senior from Melissa started all 13 games at left tackle in 2025 and was a first-team All-SEC selection by the league’s coaches. The Associated Press named him a first-team preseason All-American on Aug. 18, one of four Longhorns on that team. He is on the preseason watch lists for the Outland Trophy and the Lombardi Award. In 30 career games, he has 15 starts.
Sarkisian said before the opener that senior tackle Andre Cojoe, who filled in during Goosby’s absence, had earned snaps regardless of how the game went.
Cole Hutson Remains Sidelined Through NCAA Appeal
Hutson sued the NCAA in Travis County in July seeking a fifth season, after the NCAA’s age-based eligibility model excluded the 2022 recruiting class. He won a temporary restraining order and began practicing with the Longhorns on Aug. 7. He was listed on the roster for the Texas State game but was not on the depth chart and did not play.
Sarkisian described a second obstacle at his Monday news conference, and it is not the court case.
“Technically today he is ineligible, not because of the ruling, because of something different when it comes to the NCAA that he’s working through,” Sarkisian said. “He’s in an appeal process with the NCAA, so that’s kind of where that’s at.”
Sarkisian did not detail what the appeal involves. The NCAA did not immediately respond to an AP request for comment.
Hutson went undrafted after last season and attended rookie minicamps with the Dallas Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns. He did not sign a contract with either club. Sarkisian drew that line himself Monday.
“Cole never signed a professional contract. He was never technically a professional player,” Sarkisian said.
Hutson played in 48 games with 23 starts at three positions across four seasons in Austin. He started all 13 games at right guard as a true freshman in 2022.
Arch Manning completed 20-of-27 passes for 305 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 1 interception against Texas State. He was sacked once.
Texas is ranked No. 4 and Ohio State No. 1 in this week’s AP Top 25. Texas is a 1.5-point favorite with an over/under of 49.5, according to FanDuel Research. Kickoff at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium is 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
