FRISCO, Texas — Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown looks likely to miss Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders with a strained hamstring, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday.
Jones made his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan two days after Overshown pulled up and grabbed his right hamstring with 11:40 left in a 28-20 loss to the New York Giants. He had 7 tackles before leaving.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday that an MRI showed a strain and that Overshown should miss one to two week.
Jerry Jones On DeMarvion Overshown’s Availability
Jones went back to the word availability when 105.3 The Fan asked whether Dallas can count on Overshown long-term.
“Availability, I’ll use that word again, that’s being available to play,” Jones said. “That’s his Achilles heel, if I can have a pun a little bit.”
Jones said he has seen players go through that stretch of a career and never look back, and the Cowboys hope for the same with Overshown. The grade of this injury gave Dallas some relief.
“This isn’t the highest grade of injury with his hamstring,” Jones continued. “We’re fortunate there that he’s not looking at longer time. But it looks like he’ll miss this week.”
Dallas drafted Overshown in the third round, 90th overall, out of Texas in 2023. A torn ACL in his left knee during the 2023 preseason cost him his entire rookie year.
In 2024, Overshown had 90 tackles, 5 sacks, 4 passes defensed, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in 13 games. He also returned an interception for a touchdown against the Giants on Thanksgiving. On Dec. 9, 2024, against the Cincinnati Bengals, he tore the ACL, MCL, and PCL in his right knee. Jones told 105.3 The Fan the next morning that Overshown would need surgery.
Overshown played in 6 games in 2025 and missed the final two with a concussion.
Overshown has missed 32 games across his first three seasons. The 2026 season is the last year of his rookie contract.
Overshown was flagged for unnecessary roughness Sunday for hitting Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart out of bounds at the end of a 22-yard run on New York’s opening touchdown drive.
Who Replaces Overshown At Linebacker
Overshown served as the defensive play-call communicator in the opener. Jones said Tuesday that communication bothered him more than anything else about the defense against New York, and that the linebackers have to fill their assigned areas.
Schottenheimer named Dee Winters as the most experienced option Monday. He said rookie Jaishawn Barham, a third-round pick, got valuable playing time Sunday. Barham played 34 snaps Sunday and was flagged for a neutral zone infraction on New York’s first touchdown drive.
Schottenheimer also mentioned Shemar James, veteran Curtis Robinson, and Justin Barron.
Safety Malik Hooker also left Sunday’s game and will have surgery, Schottenheimer said Monday. Dallas is hoping for a two-week window on Hooker’s return. The Cowboys detailed both injuries after the game.
Outside linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku led Dallas with 10 combined tackles against New York. Rookie safety Caleb Downs had 7.
Dallas hosts Washington at AT&T Stadium on Sunday. Kickoff is 3:25 p.m. CT on FOX.
