‘Larry Will Be Reevaluated Next Week’: Dusty May Updates Dallas Mavericks Rookie Sergio De Larrea’s Right Knee Sprain

DALLAS — Sergio De Larrea will be reevaluated next week for the right knee sprain that has kept him out since Oct. 26, Mavericks coach Dusty May said Friday before the Dallas Mavericks’ game against the Houston Rockets.
Dallas ruled the rookie out for the 7 p.m. CT tip-off at American Airlines Center, the second straight full game he will miss. He sat out Wednesday’s 120-96 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder as well.
May calls De Larrea by his nickname, “Larry,” and used it throughout an answer that also covered Santi Aldama and Tarik Biberović. He said Biberović is getting very close to returning, though not quite as close as Aldama.
“Santi’s very close,” May said. “He’s practiced with the Legends a couple times. He played in our stay-ready game. We called it the Hunt Club, the Hunt Club today. He looks to be very close.”
“Tarik, and I know Larry had the … Yeah, Larry. Tarik’s getting very close as well,” May continued. “Not quite as close as Santi, it doesn’t appear. But Larry will be reevaluated next week, and we’ll have a much clearer picture.”
How Sergio De Larrea Got Hurt
De Larrea sprained his right knee early in the second quarter of the 113-109 win at Miami when he took a hard fall while trying to catch an inbound pass. Dallas listed him as doubtful to return before ruling him out for the rest of the night.
After that game, May said De Larrea would have imaging the next day. He also said the Mavericks were concerned because De Larrea is such a tough kid.
“I don’t know what it is. He’ll have some imaging tomorrow, but obviously concerned because he’s such a tough kid, but whatever it is, we’ll be here to support him and get through it,” May said after the Miami game. “Very unfortunate, like all these injuries. You look around the NBA and the first thing you think of when there’s an injury is just how much time these guys spend to get their bodies right and how much time they’re gonna have to spend just to get back to playing the game that they love to play.”
“And so hopefully it’s minor, but we’ll know sooner than later,” May continued.
De Larrea’s Rookie Start
Two days before the injury, De Larrea scored 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting in the Oct. 24 home opener against the San Antonio Spurs. Dallas played that game without Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving, and San Antonio won 122-106.
De Larrea was the 25th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, and Dallas acquired his rights in a draft-night trade before signing him July 3. Days after the draft, he won the Liga Endesa title with Valencia. The 20-year-old guard from Valladolid, Spain, then averaged 8.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 8.8 assists in four Summer League games.
Houston ruled out Alperen Şengün with low back soreness. Dallas closes its three-game homestand Monday against the Sacramento Kings.
