OXNARD, Calif. — The biggest names on the Dallas Cowboys roster will not be the only ones Jerry Jones is watching Saturday night in Seattle.
Jones said Thursday that Dallas plans to give plenty of work to players with limited NFL experience when the Cowboys open the preseason against the Seattle Seahawks.
“We’re going to, of course, be playing a lot of our guys that haven’t played, and I’m looking forward to that,” Jones said. “To me, really, that’s what preseason’s all about.”
Kickoff at Lumen Field is set for 7 p.m. CT. CBS 11 will carry the game in Dallas-Fort Worth, with NFL Network airing it nationally and 105.3 The Fan handling radio coverage.
Dallas Cowboys Begin Roster Evaluations in Seattle
Dallas can carry up to 90 players during training camp. That number has to be down to 53 by 5 p.m. CT on Aug. 30. Waiver claims are due the following day at noon CT.
The Cowboys have three preseason games before those decisions are made. Seattle comes first, followed by an Aug. 22 game at the Arizona Cardinals and the Aug. 28 preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints at AT&T Stadium.
Jones said preseason games give younger players a chance to show where they fit before rosters are set.
“As a fan, it gives you a chance to see the future and get to see a part of the journey to come in and be evaluated,” Jones said. “That’s what you see in these preseason games. I’ve always thought that for fans, they were a real treat to just look at the evaluation of the younger guys as they go out.”
Dallas went through its 10th practice of camp Thursday. It was the final session before the trip to Seattle.
The Cowboys practice again on Monday and hold a joint practice with New Orleans on Tuesday before leaving Oxnard.
Open Against Defending Super Bowl Champions
Seattle enters the preseason after winning Super Bowl LX in February.
The Seahawks beat New England 29-13 at Levi’s Stadium for the second championship in franchise history. Mike Macdonald coached Seattle to the title in his first season, and Kenneth Walker III was named Super Bowl MVP.
Saturday will be the ninth preseason meeting between Dallas and Seattle. The Seahawks lead the series 5-3 and won the last preseason matchup 22-14 on Aug. 19, 2023.
The teams will see each other again during the regular season. Dallas returns to Lumen Field for a Week 13 game on Dec. 7.
Before that, the Cowboys have two more preseason games and a roster to cut.
Dallas begins the regular season Sept. 13 at the New York Giants. Kickoff at MetLife Stadium is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC.
