FRISCO, Texas — Brandon Aubrey missed a 48-yard extra point with 5:21 left in the Dallas Cowboys’ 28-20 loss at the New York Giants, and coach Brian Schottenheimer put the blame on the 15 yards that created the kick. He also said Monday that his kicker has to handle the situation better when it happens again.
The attempt only existed because Javonte Williams drew a taunting penalty on a 17-yard touchdown catch from Dak Prescott. Dallas had planned a two-point try.
Schottenheimer said this is the second time the sequence has played out.
“Well, yeah, I think as we’re learning, like this same thing happened against the Jets last year, and unsportsmanlike conduct backed us up and we missed it,” Schottenheimer said. “So, again, that falls on number one. Let’s not do stupid things as a offense when we score.”

Dallas finished with nine penalties for 90 yards. Williams, a member of the team’s leadership council, ran for 41 yards on 12 carries and caught five passes for 31 yards with a touchdown.
Schottenheimer did not soften the second half of the answer.
“And then Brandon needs to find another way to settle himself down and get back to neutral and go and make it,” Schottenheimer said. “He can make those in his sleep, but it’s happened on two different occasions. So let’s stop putting him in those situations. But if we ever do again, he needs to find a better way to deal with it.”

Aubrey signed an extension this year that made him the highest-paid kicker in NFL history. He played 7 special teams snaps Sunday.
Schottenheimer was asked whether the sequence felt like the night getting away from him.
“Not with five and a half minutes to go in the game,” Schottenheimer said. “I mean, you want me to put my play sheet down and head in? No.”
Dallas trailed 28-20 after the miss. Aubrey’s kickoff reached the end zone on the change of possession, and the Cowboys did not touch the ball again.
Schottenheimer was asked to assess the game as a whole.
“As I look at this game as a whole, disappointed in the self-inflicted wounds, the offsides on defense, uncharacteristic of us doing that, the taunting, we talked about that,” he said. “Like, we just got to better than that as coaches and players. And it starts with me.”
Dallas hosts the Washington Commanders on Sunday at AT&T Stadium. Kickoff is 3:25 p.m. CT on FOX.
