ARLINGTON, Texas — Paige Bueckers spent much of Monday night chasing one of the league’s most accomplished guards, and Chelsea Gray never scored. Bueckers drew the primary assignment on Gray and held her to 0-of-5 shooting in the Dallas Wings‘ 96-66 win over the Las Vegas Aces at College Park Center. Bueckers finished with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists.
The night marked Bueckers’ return from a one-game absence. She sat out Saturday’s 84-83 loss at the Portland Fire with an ankle injury that left her day-to-day, then logged 24 minutes against the Aces.
Paige Bueckers Anchors a Smothering Dallas Wings Defense
The defensive effort set the tone for a Dallas backcourt that smothered Las Vegas. Arike Ogunbowale singled out the assignment when she described the night.
“Paige starting on Chelsea and Chelsea not scoring at all,” Ogunbowale said. “Us doing a pretty good job on Jackie and their other guards. I think our defense really dictated everything today.”
The pressure extended across the roster. Dallas held Las Vegas to a season-low 39.7% from the field and matched the Aces’ season low with 66 points allowed, limiting them to 5-of-21 from 3-point range. Jackie Young managed 6 points on 3-of-13, and Awak Kuier used her length to help hold A’ja Wilson below her scoring average. The Wings forced 14 turnovers, converted them into 18 points, and posted season highs with 10 steals and 33 defensive rebounds.
Jessica Shepard said the team’s activity fueled everything else.
“When we fly around and help each other, we can be a really good defensive team,” Shepard said. “We know that defense leads to easy offense.”
Paige Bueckers’ Playmaking and Off-Ball Impact
Bueckers opened the third quarter with the first 5 points of the half to push into double figures, then settled into a playmaking role. Her 7 assists were part of a night in which she, Ogunbowale, and Shepard each handed out 7 or more, just the second time in franchise history that three Wings reached that mark.
The arrival of Sug Sutton, who signed June 14 and debuted Monday, allowed Dallas to play Bueckers off the ball for stretches. Head coach Jose Fernandez said that is a look the staff wants to use more often, with Sutton able to organize the offense and let Bueckers work without the ball in her hands.
