FRISCO, Texas — George Pickens had a couple of plays in the Dallas Cowboys’ season opener that are a piece of cake for him to make, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Friday.
Jones spoke on the K&C Masterpiece on 105.3 The Fan, five days after a 28-20 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium.
Pickens caught 3 of 6 targets for 28 yards. He played 49 of 58 offensive snaps.
Dallas did not get the possessions it takes to win in New York, according to Jones.
“For whatever the reason, George had a couple of plays that are a piece of cake for him to make,” Jones said. “Now, his piece of cake plays to make are superhuman almost, but still he can make those plays, and we’re used to him making those plays, but I’ve seen him do them. But certainly he had that one big drop that was a meaningful play in the game.”
“In a game where we just kept the ball away from us, or we kept it away from ourselves, then those were glaring, those drops or whatever,” Jones continued. “They were glaring because we had so few opportunities relative to what our opponents did. So we’ve got to have more possessions. We’ve got to have more tries at it.”
Jerry Jones Ties George Pickens’ Drops To Cowboys’ Limited Possessions
The game was tied 7-7 late in the second quarter when Dallas took over at its own 16 after Quinnen Williams forced a fumble. Pickens dropped a deep ball from Dak Prescott on that drive.
A few plays later, Prescott was intercepted with 58 seconds left in the half. New York scored before halftime and led 14-7.
Dallas ran 52 plays to 68 for New York. The Giants held the ball for 36:40, including 21:33 in the second half, and the Cowboys had two possessions after halftime.
Brian Schottenheimer, George Pickens Respond To Week 1 Drops
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Wednesday that his call sheet carries plenty of plays for Pickens and CeeDee Lamb.
“I don’t say anything to George. George will be just fine,” Schottenheimer said. “He’s going to usually catch that ball going down the sideline and probably pull through it, then jump over people and spin and then jump into the end zone.”
Another division game makes this week urgent for Pickens.
“It’s football. You’re gonna have some here, you’re gonna have some there,” Pickens said Wednesday. “But you definitely want to limit those just to make the big plays, because I know that’s what I’m capable of.”
Pickens set career highs in his first season in Dallas in 2025 with 93 catches for 1,429 yards and 9 touchdowns on 137 targets. He made the Pro Bowl and was a second-team All-Pro.
He is playing the 2026 season on the franchise tag.
Dallas hosts the Washington Commanders on Sunday at AT&T Stadium. Kickoff is 3:25 p.m. CT on FOX.
