‘Brand New Life’: FC Dallas Rallies Past Colorado Rapids 3-1, Clinches No. 2 Seed As Kaick Scores Late Winner

FRISCO, Texas — FC Dallas scored three goals in 17 minutes on Saturday night to beat the Colorado Rapids 3-1 at Toyota Stadium. The win clinched the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.
Dallas (16-8-10, 58 points) will host the Portland Timbers in a best-of-three Round One series in the MLS Cup Playoffs. Colorado (12-15-7, 43 points) would have clinched a playoff berth with a win, and the loss ended its season.
Morgan Whittaker gave the Rapids a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute, putting away a first-touch shot on the counterattack off a cross from Georgi Minoungou. It was Colorado’s first shot of the night. Minoungou had entered at halftime and now has four assists in his last three games, and Whittaker has scored in four consecutive games.
FC Dallas coach Eric Quill made his first change in the 57th minute, when Nolan Norris replaced an injured Sebastien Ibeagha. Two of his later substitutes, Santiago Moreno and Logan Farrington, combined on the final goal.
“For them to score early in the second half, I’ve seen teams fall apart but we never did,” Quill said. “We got right back on the horse again, and we went after them. Everyone in the game was awesome. The subs came in the game and killed it, and they changed it.”
Kaick Scores Late Winner After Joaquín Valiente Equalizer
Dallas finished with a 24-5 edge in shots and an 8-2 edge in shots on target, along with 54% of possession. Petar Musa appeared to tie the game in the 68th minute, but the goal was ruled out because Joaquín Valiente was in an offside position.
Seven minutes later, Colorado cleared a corner kick out to Kaick, who played a cross back into the box for Valiente. Valiente finished it with his first touch in the 75th minute for his third goal of the season. Kaick had his third assist of the year on the play.
Anyone who was at Toyota Stadium on Saturday saw an entertaining game, in Quill’s view.
“Huge goal to give us that boost,” Quill said. “We needed it. That goal gave us brand new life and we had so many chances after that. If you were in the stadium tonight, you got an entertaining game.”
In the 88th minute, Norris sent a long ball up the field to Kaick. He cut back to get away from a defender and drove a shot from the top of the penalty area under the crossbar and inside the right post for a 2-1 lead. The goal was his fifth of the season. It was also the first time this season he recorded more than one goal contribution in a game.
With Colorado pushing players forward in the second minute of stoppage time, Farrington found Moreno in the penalty area for the third goal. Moreno has five goals and four assists this season, and his nine goal contributions rank fourth on the team.
Valiente leads Dallas with 49 key passes. His 16 goal contributions, on three goals and 13 assists, rank second on the team. Kaick set a career high with his 33rd appearance, tying Christian Cappis for the team lead.
Dallas Finishes With 58 Points, Faces Portland Timbers In Round One
In Quill’s second season, Dallas set a club record with 62 goals and won seven road games for the first time in the post-shootout era. The 58 points are the third-most in club history. Dallas also finished among the top five teams in MLS for the first time since 2016, when it won the Supporters’ Shield with 60 points.
“We’ve been a consistent model,” Quill said. “Every game we show up. … Our guys play so hard every night, and they’re positioned to win every night.”
Dallas clinched its playoff berth Oct. 14 with a 1-0 win over the Seattle Sounders. The club has also qualified for Leagues Cup 2027, its second straight appearance after beating Querétaro FC and Chivas Guadalajara in the 2026 edition.
Saturday’s game was the 100th meeting between Dallas and Colorado across all competitions. Colorado is the first opponent to reach that mark against Dallas. The announced crowd of 10,925 was the club’s 52nd consecutive regular-season sellout, with the west side of Toyota Stadium under renovation.
Dallas beat Portland 2-1 at Toyota Stadium on Sept. 12, with Farrington and Valiente scoring. The club is off this week for the November FIFA international window. Norris received a U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team call-up, and Bernard Kamungo was called up by Tanzania.
FC Dallas will host Portland in Game 1 of the series. Dates and times have not been announced.
