DSJ Quick Take: FC Dallas Beat Chivas 1-0 in Leagues Cup Phase One
FC Dallas beat Chivas de Guadalajara 1-0 on Saturday at PayPal Park behind Logan Farrington‘s 73rd-minute goal and a second straight clean sheet from Jonathan Sirois. Dallas has six points through two Phase One matches.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — FC Dallas beat Chivas de Guadalajara 1-0 on Saturday night at PayPal Park in San Jose, California. Logan Farrington scored in the 73rd minute. Dallas has six points in the Leagues Cup MLS table through two Phase One matches.
Farrington entered in the 66th minute as part of a double substitution. A Chivas turnover sent Dallas forward seven minutes later, and Kaick found Petar Musa near the top of the penalty area. Musa carried the ball past two defenders before laying it off to Santiago Moreno inside the box. Moreno took a touch and squared it to Farrington, who shifted the ball onto his left foot and finished.
The loss left Chivas with one point through two Phase One matches. Guadalajara closes its tournament Wednesday against Seattle Sounders FC at Lumen Field.
FC Dallas coach Eric Quill said his club was celebrating Saturday night and called it a massive win against a historic club in Chivas.
“Results like this give FC Dallas immense pride, our fanbase pride. And also respect,” Quill said, per MLSsoccer.com. “We’re not a finished version of ourselves; we want to keep growing and getting better. But a win like this against a historic club like Chivas is something that we’re gonna take a lot of pride in, and hopefully it gives us belief.”
Jonathan Sirois Records Second Straight Leagues Cup Clean Sheet
Jonathan Sirois kept his second clean sheet of the tournament. In the 56th minute, Armando González met a Diego Campillo cross, and Sirois pushed the header over his crossbar. Richard Ledezma tested him three minutes later from inside the penalty area.
Dallas and Charlotte FC are the only MLS clubs that have gone at least two Phase One matches without conceding a goal. Dallas has kept three straight shutouts across all competitions.
Dallas acquired Sirois from CF Montréal on Feb. 2 for up to $350,000 in General Allocation Money. He played 23 matches for Montréal last season. He made 77 saves and kept four shutouts in those matches. He left Montréal with 89 MLS regular season appearances and 23 shutouts.
Sirois made eight saves in the tournament opener, a 2-0 win over Querétaro on Aug. 5 at Mansfield Stadium in Mansfield, Texas. Moreno scored in the 47th minute of that match, and JoaquÃn Valiente added the second in the 81st.
Eric Quill’s Substitutions Reshape the Second Half
At halftime, Quill brought on Christian Cappis and Moreno for Ramiro and Samuel Sarver. Farrington and Osaze Urhoghide replaced Sebastien Ibeagha and Valiente in the 66th minute. Ran Binyamin came on for Musa in the 82nd.
Musa hit the post in the 70th minute after rounding Chivas goalkeeper Raúl Rangel from close range.
Musa has 12 goals and 2 assists in 1,040 minutes across 13 MLS appearances this season. He scored for Croatia at the 2026 World Cup.
Farrington signed a contract extension on July 10 that runs through the 2027-28 season, with club options for 2028-29 and 2029-30. He had six goals and four assists in 14 appearances at the time of the announcement. Dallas selected him third overall in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft.
Moreno joined Dallas on loan from Fluminense on March 27, with a club option for a permanent transfer. In four and a half seasons with the Portland Timbers, he made 131 regular season appearances with 20 goals and 40 assists.
FC Dallas Close Phase One at Deportivo Toluca FC
Dallas plays its Phase One finale Wednesday at Estadio Nemesio DÃez. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. CT, and the match streams on Apple TV.
Quill said Chivas has been a powerhouse for decades. He said the Chivas name did not overwhelm his team on Saturday.
“We’re about to go to Toluca, so we’re gonna be in a similar environment [as Saturday night]. Obviously, not the altitude,” Quill explained. “But it was a good exercise to take on, given what’s coming to us in a few days.”
Deportivo Toluca FC has three points through two matches. The Liga MX side opened with a 3-0 win over Seattle on Aug. 5 at Estadio Nemesio DÃez, the first Leagues Cup match played in Mexico. Toluca then lost 1-0 at Los Angeles FC on Saturday to Eddie Segura‘s stoppage-time goal.
Toluca won the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup in May, beating Tigres UANL on penalties at Estadio Nemesio DÃez after the final finished 1-1 through extra time.
Phase One matches that finish level go to a penalty shootout. A win in regulation is worth three points, a shootout win two, and a shootout loss one. The top four clubs in the MLS table and the top four in the Liga MX table advance to the quarterfinals. Goal differential is the first tiebreaker.
Dallas has scored three goals in Phase One and has not conceded.
