FRISCO, Texas — Dak Prescott can tie an NFL record Sunday when the Dallas Cowboys host the Washington Commanders at AT&T Stadium. Prescott has won 19 straight home starts against NFC East opponents, a streak that dates to 2017. Tom Brady holds the record with 20 in a row from 2007 to 2014.
After the opener, Prescott is right there leading the pack in putting the loss in the rearview mirror, Stephen Jones said Friday on 105.3 The Fan’s “G-Bag Nation.”
“One, it’s not surprising at all because that’s what he is. He’s a competitor. He never wavers,” Jones said. “He’s just so valuable to us, especially in a situation like what just happened. I mean, obviously our team, our coaches, our organization, our front office were all fired up about getting the season started. And that’s part of when you play in the NFL, sometimes it’s not going to go the way you expect it. And he’s right there leading the pack of putting it in the rearview mirror and knowing that something good is going to happen for this team because we’ve prepared the right way.”
“We’ve got the right kind of guys on the team. We all feel a lot of confidence,” Jones continued. “And Coach Schottenheimer and his entire staff, that’s just the way he is. And that’s why he has some of these amazing win records. I know [he’d] trade them all to get to play in a conference championship game and get to win a Super Bowl. I know that’s his ultimate goal. I know that’s what motivates him, and [I] have a lot of confidence that he’s going to keep these guys certainly focused on the task at hand, and that’s why we still feel really good about our football team.”
Dak Prescott’s Opener Against The New York Giants
Prescott went 22-of-34 for 175 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception in the 28-20 loss to the New York Giants. He was not sacked. He has lost his last two starts against New York after winning 14 in a row against the Giants.
The interception came with the score tied 7-7 inside the final two minutes of the first half. New York scored touchdowns before halftime and on the opening possession of the third quarter. Dallas has to protect the ball in critical situations at the end of a half, Jones said.
“Certainly, I know Dak’s one of the best in the business of protecting the ball, and we’ve got to do that, especially in critical situations at the end of a half where you certainly want to get that last score,” Jones said. “Unfortunately, to the contrary, we allowed them to get the last score and then getting the ball back there to start the second. I think Coach Schotty and his staff call it a double dip. We’ve got it put on us rather than going the other way.”
On Monday, Jones called that stretch a real turning point in the game.

Dallas swept Washington last season. In the first meeting, a 44-22 win at AT&T Stadium on Oct. 19, 2025, Prescott went 21-of-30 for 264 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Prescott and the offense feel good that they can do what they need to do to win games, Jones said.
“I know our team has a lot of confidence in themselves,” Jones said. “I know Dak on his side of the ball and his group all feel good that they can certainly do what they need to do to win games. And I know Christian and this defense know they can play a lot better and will [be] better.”
Washington lost 24-22 at the Philadelphia Eagles in its opener. Kickoff Sunday is 3:25 p.m. CT on FOX.
