‘Much More Consistency’: Klayton Adams Praises Tyler Guyton’s Dallas Cowboys Camp Progress

OXNARD, Calif. — Tyler Guyton has put practices back to back this summer, Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams said Wednesday, a change from what Adams understood about the tackle’s first two training camps.

Guyton has started 21 of the 25 games he has played since Dallas drafted him 29th overall in 2024. He started 10 games last season.

Klayton Adams on Tyler Guyton’s Development

Adams said he decided early in camp to stay quiet about Guyton and let the days pass before drawing any conclusion.

“I think we’ve seen much more consistency from him. I don’t know what training camp was like his rookie season, but my understanding was that he was kind of in and out of the lineup, and that was the same thing as last year,” Adams said. “And so knock on wood, but I’m happy to be to the point that we’re at in training camp and him being able to put practices back to back.”

“And they all haven’t been perfect, but they haven’t been for any of our guys,” Adams continued. “And so just trying to find consistency and confidence in his play has been kind of a special journey watching him because I’m proud of the work that he’s put in and the mental toughness that he’s developed and some of the maturity, the maturation process that he’s gone through all the way through the offseason.”

Guyton played at TCU for two seasons before transferring to Oklahoma, where he spent 2022 and 2023.

Competition in the Cowboys’ Offensive Room

Adams was noncommittal on whether competition motivated Guyton specifically. He was direct about what competition does for the roster generally, and he pointed to the daily work between the offense and the defense.

“To me, it’s the main function of our program here,” Adams said. “Shotty says it all the time, but to me, that’s just life, and anything that we do when you have great competition, like watching our offense and our defense go against each other, it just makes everybody better.”

“And so one of the things that we’ve said in the offensive room is just being outward focused with some of those things of, yeah, you’re competing against each other, but when you can truly be happy for another guy’s growth and use that as motivation for your own growth, that’s when we can be operating at a really high level, to me, higher than other teams,” Adams added.

Dallas has two preseason games left. The Cowboys play at Arizona on Saturday at 9 p.m. CT and host New Orleans on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. CT.
