‘Growth And Consistency’: Joe Milton III Draws Praise As Dallas Cowboys Keep QB Decision Open

OXNARD, Calif. — The Dallas Cowboys have not settled on a starting quarterback for Saturday’s preseason game at Arizona, offensive coordinator Klayton Adams said Wednesday.

Sam Howell started the Aug. 15 opener at Lumen Field and played the entire first half. Joe Milton III took the second half.

Howell went 8-of-12 for 94 yards and a touchdown, also without an interception. Milton completed 12 of 15 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown without turning the ball over.

Undrafted rookie Camden Brown was on the other end of both touchdown passes. He caught all 3 of his targets for 62 yards.

Klayton Adams On Joe Milton III’s Response

Adams said competition is built into what Dallas is doing, and the staff wants players focused on their own work instead of constantly looking over at the next guy.

“We’ve had discussions about it. We haven’t made any definite decision about this weekend,” Adams said. “But I’d say just based on the way that he played, he definitely responded the right way.”

“I think Schotty said it after the game, but he looked under control,” Adams continued. “And to be honest with you, that’s what we’ve seen most of camp. And just like any player, there’s going to be a couple of up moments and down moments. And what we’ve seen mostly from Joe has been growth and consistency.”

Milton is entering his third NFL season and his second year with the Cowboys. New England selected Milton in the sixth round in 2024, then dealt him to Dallas the next offseason.

Milton got into 4 games last season. He completed 15 of 24 passes for 183 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.

The Quarterback Room Behind Dak Prescott

Howell arrived in Dallas this offseason and is entering Year 5 in the league.

Washington took Howell 144th overall in the fifth round of the 2022 draft out of North Carolina. Seattle, Minnesota, and Philadelphia have all had him since. Through last season, Howell had 4,139 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions.

Dak Prescott remains firmly atop the depth chart and sat out the preseason opener in Seattle. Prescott started all 17 games last season, throwing for 4,552 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
