ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers recalled right-hander Gavin Collyer from Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday. The club also optioned right-hander Winston Santos to the Arizona Complex League Rangers ahead of the middle game of a three-game series against the New York Mets at Globe Life Field.
Santos had been on the active roster since Sunday, when Texas recalled him from Round Rock to take the spot of right-hander Cal Quantrill. Quantrill went on the 15-day injured list with a right lat strain, and the Rangers transferred him to the 60-day list on Tuesday. Santos did not pitch in Sunday’s 7-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays or in Tuesday’s 6-3 loss to the Mets.
A day earlier, Texas optioned left-hander Adam Macko to the ACL Rangers in the same set of moves that activated right-hander Peyton Gray from the 15-day injured list. After Wednesday’s moves, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on their major league roster, with six players on the 60-day injured list.
Gavin Collyer Returns For Fourth Stint With Texas Rangers
Wednesday’s recall is Collyer’s fourth stint on the Texas active roster this season. He was up from April 15 to May 18, from May 24 to May 31, and from June 30 to July 17. In 23 relief appearances over those three stints, he went 1-1 with a 5.09 ERA. He has 22 strikeouts and 19 walks in 23 innings.
From April 15 to May 9, Collyer opened his major league career with 11 straight scoreless appearances, which set a Washington-Texas franchise record for consecutive scoreless outings to begin a career. His most recent big-league appearance came July 17 against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park, where he pitched 1 inning and allowed 2 hits, 4 earned runs, 2 walks, and 1 strikeout while also hitting a batter. Texas optioned him to Round Rock the next day and activated right-hander Jakob Junis from the 15-day injured list.
When he was optioned in July, Collyer was 2-0 with a 2.65 ERA, 14 walks, and 26 strikeouts in 17 relief outings for Round Rock. The Rangers drafted him in the 12th round in 2019. He elected free agency on Nov. 6, 2025, re-signed with Texas on a minor league contract Dec. 16, and had his contract selected from Round Rock on April 15.
Winston Santos Optioned After One Major League Appearance
Santos, 24, has made one major league appearance across three stints with Texas this season. It came July 1 against the Cleveland Guardians, when he pitched the final 2 innings of a 9-4 loss and allowed 2 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout.
His first call-up came June 24, when Texas recalled him from Double-A Frisco during a series at Miami. MLB Pipeline had Santos ranked fifth in the Rangers’ system at the time. He was 1-3 with a 7.44 ERA, 21 walks, and 58 strikeouts over 11 starts and 42 1/3 innings for Frisco before that recall.
Santos did not appear in a Cactus League game this spring. A line-drive comebacker fractured his left hand during a live batting practice session Feb. 17. He missed nearly all of the 2025 season with a stress reaction in his back. Texas added him to the 40-man roster before the 2025 season to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.
Texas (78-79) is tied with the Houston Astros atop the American League West, and Houston holds the tiebreaker. Left-hander Cody Bradford starts Wednesday against the Mets at 7:05 p.m. CT. The Rangers close the regular season with three games at the Minnesota Twins from Sept. 25-27.
