ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers transferred right-hander Cal Quantrill to the 60-day injured list Tuesday, one day after president of baseball operations Chris Young said he would not rule Quantrill out for the playoffs.
A player on the 60-day injured list cannot be reinstated until 60 days after his original placement. Texas placed Quantrill on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right lat strain.
The transfer came in the same set of moves that reinstated infielder/outfielder Michael Helman from the 60-day list. The Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on their major league roster, with six players on the 60-day injured list. Texas also placed designated hitter Joc Pederson on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, activated right-hander Peyton Gray from the 15-day list, and optioned left-hander Adam Macko to the Arizona Complex League Rangers.
Cal Quantrill’s Lat Strain And Exit Against Toronto
Quantrill recorded 4 outs Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays before he was removed after a visit to the mound in the second inning. He averaged 91.7 mph on his four-seam fastball that night, down from 93.8 mph for the season. His last fastball registered 87.8 mph. Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said the club knew going into the game that Quantrill’s velocity was down.
Left-hander Jordan Montgomery took over and recorded the next 11 outs without allowing a hit. Texas won 6-2. The Rangers recalled right-hander Winston Santos from Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday to take Quantrill’s roster spot.
It was Quantrill’s second straight start to end early. On Sept. 13 at the Arizona Diamondbacks, he went 6 innings and allowed 5 hits and 2 earned runs, with 0 walks and 4 strikeouts on 70 pitches, before back tightness forced him out.
Young gave his update Monday on 105.3 The Fan’s G-Bag Nation during the team’s off day. He said Montgomery had picked up the club Saturday.
“It was really a bad break for Cal in terms of the injury,” Young said. “He’s had such a tremendous year and a great second half. He’s been our best pitcher in the second half. And to see him get hurt was really, really tough. Jordan Montgomery stepped in and really picked us up and allowed us to win a game. But for Cal, it was a tough ending to his regular season.”
Young said Quantrill would not pitch again in the regular season. He called the lat strain a real injury.
“I won’t rule the playoffs out yet, but that said, he does have a lat strain, which is a significant injury, and the likelihood that he will be back for October at best, to be determined,” Young explained.
Cal Quantrill’s 2026 Season With The Texas Rangers
Quantrill is 9-5 with a 2.86 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP this season. He has 81 strikeouts and 25 walks in 110 innings.
Young said Monday that Jacob deGrom will pitch one of the final six games. The rest of the rotation will be set day by day. MacKenzie Gore starts Tuesday against the New York Mets at 7:05 p.m. CT at Globe Life Field.
Texas (78-78) leads the Houston Astros by one game in the American League West. Houston holds the tiebreaker. The Rangers close the regular season with three games at the Minnesota Twins from Sept. 25-27. The postseason begins Sept. 29.
