Josh Richardson announced his retirement Wednesday night on Instagram after 10 NBA seasons and six franchises. He spent the 2020-21 season in Dallas after arriving in the Seth Curry trade.

DALLAS — Former Dallas Mavericks guard Josh Richardson announced his retirement from basketball on Thursday.

“I always gave my best, that’s why I can say this with no regret,” Richardson wrote on his Instagram. “I am grateful to have been able to love this game and it love me back as much as it did. It wasn’t set up for me at any point in my career, and from high school, college and the pros, I humbly worked my butt off every day to be the best that I could be. All my fans, coaches and teammates, I hope I left a good impression and a positive view of me.”

Richardson played with Dallas in the 2020-21 season, averaging 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists while starting in 56 of his 59 contests with the team.

His team-high with the Mavericks came in a March 11 matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder, where Richardson tallied 27 points and 6 assists on 10-of-15 shooting.

Josh Richardson’s NBA Career

Before his stint with Dallas, Richardson was selected with the 40th overall pick in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft by the Miami Heat after playing four years at the University of Tennessee.

Richardson played his first four seasons in South Beach, averaging a career-high 16.6 points per game in the 2018-19 season. In February of that year, he recorded 37 points against the Golden State Warriors, marking a career-best.

That summer, Miami sent Richardson to the Philadelphia 76ers in a trade that netted the Heat Jimmy Butler. He played 55 games in his one season with Philadelphia before the Mavericks acquired him and Tyler Bey for Seth Curry.

After the Dallas Mavericks Trade

Dallas moved on from Richardson after the 2020-21 campaign, sending him to the Boston Celtics for Moses Brown. After 44 games in Boston, the Celtics traded Richardson as part of a package to the San Antonio Spurs for Derrick White.

After acquiring White, Boston made a run to the 2022 NBA Finals, where the Celtics fell to Golden State. Two years later, however, Boston won an NBA Championship against the Mavericks with White as a major contributor.

So, one could say that Richardson helped the Celtics to their first title since 2008.

He closed his NBA career with a brief pitstop after being traded to the New Orleans Pelicans before returning to the Heat for his final two seasons. Richardson last played in 2024-25, with career averages of 11.5 points, 3 rebounds and 2.6 assists across 554 games.
