‘Write Our Own Story’: Dak Prescott, Von Miller Point To Past Turnarounds As Dallas Cowboys Fall To 3-5

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys fell to 3-5 Sunday with a 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals at AT&T Stadium. The 2018 Cowboys were also 3-5 after eight games and made the playoffs, and Dak Prescott is the last player left from that team.
Dallas has not won consecutive games this season. Its wins over Washington, Houston, and Philadelphia were each followed by a loss, and the Cowboys are 1-2 over their last three games.
Prescott confirmed he is the last holdover from 2018, and he has brought that season up to his teammates.
“At this point, man, talk is cheap,” Prescott said. “Telling stories is cheap. We’ve got to go write our own story. We’ve put ourselves in this position. Thankfully, we’ve got the pen. Thankfully, we’re in control of it.”
“It’s a season where our division doesn’t, right, nobody’s taking off heavy and putting everybody else behind, and that’s the blessing in it,” Prescott continued. “Yeah, that gives me a lot of confidence knowing that we can, I can do it, we can do it. And trust me, if we would have won this game, that would have been two in the confidence that we would have taken onto this. That’s the challenging part, not letting this one dwell.”
Dallas led 24-10 with 14:20 left in regulation and 30-24 with 1:09 to play Sunday.
“It’s frustrating. You want to stack wins,” Prescott explained. “You want to show that you can. People tell me often, a good game or this and that, I go, yeah, we got to do it again. We got to do it again. Like what’s in the rearview mirror doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter. It’s what’s in front of us. We can check the side mirrors here and there, but, like, we’ve got to focus on what’s important now, this moment, this play, this game.”
Von Miller Says He Has Been Here Before
Von Miller, a two-time Super Bowl champion, called himself one of the most optimistic teammates a team could have. He said his job is to keep the team’s camaraderie from fading.
“Unfortunately, I’ve been here before and been able to get out of it,” Miller said. “My job is to make sure our spirit and our camaraderie doesn’t fade. We did some good things today, not enough good things. We’ve got some great coaches, great players. We’ve just got to find the combination and the rhythm of the things that we do during the week to make sure we can finish our games and play well on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays.”
Miller won a Super Bowl with the 2015 Denver Broncos. He said that team won nine games by 3 points or fewer, and the Cowboys have been on the other side of those games this season.
“I won two Super Bowls,” Miller explained. “I noticed, especially in 2015, we won nine games within three points or less, kind of like this season. We’ve been on the other side of those games. But just keep going. We’ve got a great quarterback, great wide receivers, great players, great offensive line. Quinnen Williams had an amazing day. Just got to keep pushing and keep believing in each other. That’s all I know how to do.”
Miller called Sunday a gut punch, and he said practices and meetings have been strong over the last three weeks.
“You have to recognize that that’s the reality,” Miller said. “But also, reality is, too, we’ve got great players and great coaches on this team, too. And I think if we can rally behind each other, we can still write our own narrative, just come together. We’ve been doing it over the last couple of weeks, especially the last three weeks. One and two the last three weeks.”
“But I really feel like we’ve had great practices, great meetings, and just the energy of the team is, it’s been amazing,” Miller continued. “You’ve just got to find the right combination to go out there and play 60 minutes.”
Kenny Clark, Tyler Smith, Malachi Lawrence Lean On The Work
Kenny Clark said there is a lot of season left.
“It’s tough, bro. It’s tough. You don’t want to have these losses,” Clark said. “Got control of the game most of the game. To lose it, it’s just disappointing. All I know is to lean on my work, get back to work tomorrow, and got to get a big win next week.”
Tyler Smith said the up-and-down results are an extremely hard pill to swallow.
“At the end of the day, the only thing you control is your body of work,” Smith said. “Regardless of what life throws at you, it’s less about what happens to you and how you respond to it. I feel like the only thing we can do is go to work, get better with a purpose, be intentional about the things that we do so we can come back and get the results that we want.”
Malachi Lawrence, the 23rd overall pick in the 2026 draft, is in his first NFL season.
“Following my vets as well as helping them out, keeping their head up and keeping the team’s head up,” Lawrence said. “Like they said, just coming in and work because we know what we have as a team. We know we can close these games out.”
Dallas visits the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 8 at Lucas Oil Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon CT on FOX. The Cowboys host the San Francisco 49ers on Nov. 15.
