OXNARD, Calif. — Jerry Jones said Tuesday he feels pressure to win a Super Bowl in 2026 and that he would trade future draft capital to improve the Dallas Cowboys before opening day. The owner and general manager spoke at the team’s opening training camp press conference at 1 p.m. CT, seated alongside chief operating officer Stephen Jones and Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer, one day after the team charter landed in California.
Jones was asked during the session whether he feels the weight to win it all going into the season.
“Yes, yes I do,” Jones said. “For all the obvious reasons. We’ve got certain things in place here that won’t stay in place. I personally think that when you haven’t done it before, when you’re not necessarily young you just haven’t done it before, I think that is a huge value to your associates… That is a good pressure to be involved with a group that has really, they can do something they haven’t been a part of.”
Dallas finished 7-9-1 last season and missed the playoffs for the second straight year. The franchise has not reached an NFC Championship Game since the 1995 season, which ended with its most recent Super Bowl title.
Jerry Jones Pushes Back On The Quiet Offseason Label
Training camp openings in recent years have been dominated by contract standoffs. Micah Parsons was the story a year ago before he was traded to the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 28, and Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Zack Martin each carried negotiations into camp in years prior. Nothing is outstanding this summer.
“I like the idea that the word is that we have had a quiet offseason, relative to dare I say off the field noise or chatter,” Jones said. “I like that, that hasn’t been the case. We’ve had a lot going on. We’ve had to really scramble a lot, the kind of stuff that you don’t see. But that should be that way, it’s supposed to be hard… We even did more than I could have anticipated when we started. I personally like the fact that the perception is that it’s been a quiet, non-confrontational offseason. That’s good.”
Jones returned several times to his willingness to move picks for immediate help.
“I’d give up future to add substantive to where we are today,” Jones said.
George Pickens And Quinnen Williams Contract Situations
George Pickens signed his franchise tender in April and is locked into a fully guaranteed one-year deal worth $27.3 million. The July 15 deadline for tagged players to sign long-term contracts passed without an agreement, and Pickens cannot negotiate a new deal with Dallas until after the regular-season finale against the Washington Commanders in January 2027. He was the only one of four tagged players league-wide who did not reach an extension this offseason.
Pickens caught 93 passes for 1,429 yards and 9 touchdowns in 17 games last season, his first in Dallas after arriving from the Pittsburgh Steelers in a May 2025 trade. He finished third in the NFL in receiving yards, earned his first Pro Bowl selection, and was named second-team All-Pro. The Cowboys can tag him again in 2027 at roughly $32.8 million.
That leaves Quinnen Williams as the only extension candidate of consequence on the roster. Stephen Jones said Tuesday that the team was “absolutely” open to a long-term deal and that discussions with Williams’ agent about the process have already taken place.
Dallas acquired Williams from the New York Jets on Nov. 4, 2025, sending New York defensive tackle Mazi Smith, a 2026 second-round pick, and a 2027 first-round pick. The third overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Williams has made four Pro Bowls and one first-team All-Pro team, and he is scheduled for unrestricted free agency in 2028 with an out on his contract after 2027. The market moved again last week when the Philadelphia Eagles signed Jalen Carter to a four-year, $152 million extension.
Rebuilding The Dallas Cowboys Defense Under Christian Parker
The Cowboys allowed 511 points last season, the most in franchise history and the most in the NFL, at 30.1 per game. They ranked 30th in yards allowed at 377 per game. Matt Eberflus was fired Jan. 5 after one season, and Christian Parker was hired from Philadelphia on Jan. 22.
At 34, Parker is the youngest coordinator in franchise history, and he is installing a 3-4 base that Dallas has not run since 2012. The Cowboys interviewed nine candidates for the job and more than 40 for the defensive staff overall. Five of their seven draft picks in April were spent on defense, including the eleventh and twenty-third overall selections. Rashan Gary, acquired from Green Bay in March for a 2027 fourth-round pick, joins a front that already includes Williams and Kenny Clark. Gary had 7.5 sacks in 16 games last season.
“We don’t have any alternative,” Jones said of the turnover. “We made that bed when we brought in new scheme, new coaches, new players. We’re going with new right there. I’ve bought into that, that’s going to happen, we’re here. Now, in dealing with it, we’ve got to start out here right now doing as best we can and bringing that thing to opening day.”
Dak Prescott And The Super Bowl Or Bust Framing
Prescott arrived in Oxnard wearing a Super Bowl XXX shirt, a reference to Dallas’ last championship. The eleventh-year quarterback has described his approach as Super Bowl or bust, and Tyler Smith echoed that on Monday. Prescott threw for 4,552 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions across all 17 games last season, and the Cowboys led the league with 4,735 passing yards.
“Dak’s feeling about it is more important than me feeling about it because Dak actually tangibly can cause his teammates to play at a higher level than I can,” Jones said. “So when Dak is that positive about it, that adds some credibility to it.”
Super Bowl LXI will be played Feb. 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, roughly 60 miles down the coast from the fields where the Cowboys are practicing this month.
“I feel like we’ve got a chance to really be good,” Jones said. “It’s going to be hard… Bottom line is, I love the excitement. [The media], for all practical purposes, don’t expect us to be a contender in the Super Bowl. Y’all don’t. Why would you? I like that, I do. I like that, and I like what we’ve put together to show you that we can do it.”
Jones was later asked how he would define a successful 2026 season.
“I think to contend for a Super Bowl, which if you contend you’ve got a real chance of being in the game,” Jones said. “I think those are the kinds of things that I don’t believe are outlandish or a reach to expect. That’s a successful season. I expect us to be significantly improved defensively. Significantly improved. I actually expect us to improve over on the offense.”
Dallas holds its first practice Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. CT at River Ridge Playing Fields, with the first padded practice set for Aug. 3. Joint practices with the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints are on the camp schedule, and the Oxnard portion closes Aug. 18. The preseason opener is Aug. 15 at Seattle at 7 p.m. CT on CBS. The regular season begins Sept. 13 at the New York Giants, with kickoff at 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC.
