ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers activated catcher Danny Jansen from the 60-day injured list Tuesday and designated catcher Austin Wynns for assignment.
Jansen has been out since June 6, when Texas placed him on the 10-day injured list with a right forearm strain, retroactive to June 3. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list July 29. In 41 games before the injury, Jansen batted .171/.277/.309 with 3 home runs and 12 RBIs.
The rehab assignment began Aug. 11 at Triple-A Round Rock against Sugar Land. Jansen caught five innings that night and went 1-for-2 with a run scored. He caught 7 innings Saturday in his fourth rehab game. Before Sunday’s game in West Sacramento, Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said Jansen could be ready soon.
Jansen signed a two-year, $14.5 million contract with Texas last offseason. There’s an $8 million mutual option for 2028 attached to it, with a $2.25 million buyout. He turned 31 in April. Nine major league seasons have gotten him to 91 home runs and a .216 average.
Austin Wynns Designated For Assignment
In 14 games with Texas, Wynns hit .276/.323/.379. His only home run and only RBI of the season came in that stretch. He is on a one-year, $1.1 million deal that expires after this season.
Texas was his third major league stop this year. Wynns went .077/.143/.077 in 14 games with the Athletics. Six games with the Atlanta Braves produced one hit, a .071 average. Wynns has 312 games in the majors over eight seasons, and his career line is .230/.274/.344 with 20 home runs and 85 RBIs.
Designating Wynns opened the active roster spot for Jansen. Texas had been a man short on the 40-man roster since Saturday, carrying 39.
The other Opening Day catcher is still out. Kyle Higashioka landed on the 10-day injured list July 21 with a right flexor strain, and he started throwing again last week. He had played 56 games to that point, batting .218/.306/.370 with 7 home runs and 18 RBIs.
That leaves Jansen and Elias Díaz as the catchers on the active roster. Díaz is hitting .226/.246/.346 with 3 home runs and 15 RBIs in 51 games. Logan O’Hoppe, acquired from the Los Angeles Angels on July 29 and optioned to Round Rock after the trade, is the other catcher on the 40-man roster. Schumaker named Ezequiel Durán the emergency option behind the plate on Sunday.
Marco Gonzales Elects Free Agency
Marco Gonzales is a free agent again. The left-hander cleared waivers and turned down an outright assignment. Texas had designated him Saturday in West Sacramento, and the roster spot went to right-hander Jakob Junis, back from a left adductor strain that put him on the 15-day injured list.
It was the second time this season the Rangers designated Gonzales. Texas signed him to a minor league contract in late June and selected him to the roster in late July. He was designated for assignment July 31, cleared waivers, and returned to the organization on another minor league deal. His contract was selected again Aug. 14.
Gonzales made only three appearances for Texas. He went 6.2 innings and gave up 7 hits and 1 earned run, walked 4, and struck out 3, which left him at a 1.35 ERA. The save he picked up July 21 was the first of his major league career. He worked the last 3 innings of a 10-0 win over the Chicago White Sox. Friday at Sutter Health Park, he threw one pitch, an eighth-inning grounder that turned into a double play.
Elbow surgery cost him all of 2025. Before this season, his last major league work had come in 2024 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Seattle Mariners have seven of his 11 seasons. Gonzales is 66-50 with a 4.14 ERA, and 162 of his 173 appearances have been starts. He has 691 strikeouts in 933.1 innings.
The Colorado Rockies drafted him in the 29th round in 2010, out of Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins. He went to Gonzaga University instead. The St. Louis Cardinals took him 19th overall three years later.
Texas Rangers Open Series With Washington Nationals
At 61-64, Texas sits second in the American League West. The Houston Astros are two games ahead. Sunday’s 5-2 loss in West Sacramento closed out the trip, and Monday was an off day.
First pitch against the Washington Nationals is at 7:05 p.m. CT on Tuesday at Globe Life Field, with the broadcast on Rangers Sports Network. Cal Quantrill starts for the Rangers against Jackson Kent. Washington is 60-66. The three-game series ends Thursday, and the Angels come to Arlington on Friday.
