OXNARD, Calif. — Von Miller is expected in Oxnard on Monday night. The Dallas Cowboys plan to start working him in Tuesday.
Dallas agreed to terms with Miller on Sunday on a one-year deal. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the contract is worth $5.5 million and can reach $7.5 million. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the agreement.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Dallas will not rush Miller after he missed training camp. The first step is getting him around his new teammates and the defensive staff.
“He’ll be a ramp up,” Schottenheimer said. “He’s going to be no different than any new player you would add, certainly one that hasn’t been in camp. We’re not going to rush him out there. There’s no need to do that. It’s more getting him around the fellas, getting him with Chidera and CP and the defensive staff. But he’s going to be in a ramp up. I’m pretty sure he hasn’t forgot how to rush the passer or play football. But we’ll be smart with him. And I think he gets in tonight and we’ll get rolling with him tomorrow.”
Von Miller Arrives Before Saints Joint Practice
Tuesday is also Dallas’ joint practice with the New Orleans Saints, the second of camp after the Los Angeles Rams came to Oxnard on Aug. 11.
Schottenheimer said the Saints will get fewer reps than Los Angeles did because New Orleans has another joint practice with the Rams later in the week. Dallas plans more situational work Tuesday, along with special teams periods.
The Cowboys are three weeks into camp and played their first preseason game Saturday, beating the Seattle Seahawks 17-7.
Veterans can work around parts of a new system they do not know yet with reminders from the sideline, Schottenheimer said. He saw it during his time in San Diego after the Chargers added Keenan McCardell during the season.
“When you ask the question I always try to go on what first jumps into my mind,” Schottenheimer explained. “It wasn’t during training camp, but we brought in in San Diego we brought in Keenan McCardell like week three or four. He came in on a Tuesday night and played 65 plays on Sunday, which is unusual. But veterans, they know how to figure it out. And you find like a little cheat code that helps them, certain things that they might not know. They look to the sidelines and you give them a little reminder and they’re like, yeah, I got that. But I think he ended up playing 65 plays, had a couple catches, and it’s one of the benefits of being a guy that understands the game.”
Miller has also trained with pass rush coach BT Jordan. Jordan has worked with Cowboys assistant Chidera Uzo-Diribe for years, and Schottenheimer said the two teach the position the same way.
Von Miller Joins Dallas Cowboys Pass Rush
Rashan Gary arrived by trade this offseason. Dallas drafted Malachi Lawrence 23rd overall in April, and Donovan Ezeiruaku is entering his second season.
Miller had 9 sacks for the Washington Commanders last season while playing 36.9% of the defensive snaps. It was his highest sack total since 2021. Through 14 seasons, Miller has 138.5 career sacks. He is tied with DeMarcus Ware for ninth on the NFL’s official list, which dates to 1982.
Miller has made eight Pro Bowls and won two Super Bowls. He went to DeSoto High School before playing at Texas A&M.
Dallas plays at the Arizona Cardinals on Aug. 22 at 9 p.m. CT. The Cowboys close the preseason against New Orleans on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. CT at AT&T Stadium.
